Buried Child: Sam Shepard's Pulitzer-Winning Family Drama

Full Price:
$20.00 - $45.00
Our Price:
$10.00 - $22.50

Set during the rural economic slowdown of the 1970s, playwright Sam Shepard's universally acclaimed Buried Child resonates as strongly today as it did when it launched Shepard's career in 1978. A Pulitzer winner for drama, Buried Child makes for a fierce, forceful and unforgettable portrayal of the realities of the American Dream. The realistic masterpiece mixes comedy and drama, keen commentary and deep emotion in a squalid farm home occupied by a clan filled with suppressed violence, apparent unhappiness and dark secrets. The BH Playhouse is a small venue, about 50 seats, and is primarily an acting school, so honestly we were expecting fairly amateur theater.... We were very pleasantly surprised.

The cast are all professional actors, and several are Broadway veterans. It's a good ensemble, they all play off one another very well, but the fellow in the role of Henry Irving really steals the show.

This play starts out exceptionally strong, and though it tapers off a bit towards the end, overall it's a very good piece of work. Some of the transitions are a bit shaky, but for a new work this is a very solid show.

I'd definitely recommend it, it's charming, witty, and above all, entertaining.

This is an excellent opportunity to see a new musical in an extraordinarily intimate setting. The cast is uniformly strong, and some of the songs are truly memorable (especially the funny "patter" songs, although one or two of the ballads are very powerful as well). Really worth seeing.

This is a marvellous evening of inventive theater for the more "serious" playgoer. If you're looking for HAIRSPRAY or MARY POPPINS, this one isn't for you. The show tackles the based-on-fact story of the complicated relationship between Bram Stoker (as he was struggling to turn his book DRACULA into a play), and his boss...Henry Irving, one of the most admired and well-known actor/impresarios of the day. It posits the notion that the relationship between Dracula and Jonathan Harker in the book is a reflection of the real life relationship between Irving and Stoker. The story is enhanced by a number of wonderful songs, both tender and funny, with a stunning climactic number. The cast is excellent and the physical production makes one marvel at what small theaters in LA can do with limited means. It may not be perfect but it's entertaining and thought-provoking. Take a look for yourself.

Extremely high level of acting with Broadway ability. Very interesting and clever production and is one of the best events I have seen through Goldstar and I have seen well over 50 events.
