It's Christmas Eve 1864 and in the White House, President and Mrs. Lincoln plot their gift-giving. On the Potomac, a young rebel soldier challenges a Union blacksmith's mercy. In the streets, a fugitive from slavery searches for her daughter on the night she finds freedom. In this new play with music from Pulitzer Prize winner Paula Vogel, these stories and more are woven into an American tapestry.

Il Matrimonio Segreto: Cimarosa's Comic Opera from BU

Full Price:
$20.00
Our Price:
$10.00

The Boston University College of Fine Arts brings Domenico Cimarosa's rarely performed Italian comic opera, Il Matrimonio Segreto (The Secret Marriage) to the stage. This light-footed work from 1792 -- considered the composer's masterpiece -- weaves through scenes of romantic intrigue and thwarted couplings, featuring some of opera buffa's greatest roles. It tells the story of three mismatched couples comically beset by unrequited love, which begins when an English count arrives in Italy to wed one sister, but then ends up falling for the other. This show was a d-o-g dog! Rambling, way too long, and not particularly compelling, it tried to do far too much without any real emotional connection to the characters. The directing choices were also bizarre - with actors playing multiple roles, despite there being plenty of actors being under-utilized.

The performers were very talented and they put a lot of effort in, but the material was lacking. The script moved so slowly and there wasn't much to entice the audience to stay past the intermission. That being the case, I left at the intermission and felt as though I'd wasted my evening and my money.

Beautiful singing, but too many characters and interwoven stories to capture and hold my interest. Some great characters though -- Silver was a crowd favorite.

I was surprisingly pleased with the way I was drawn into the plot.
