During his short life in Stalinist Russia, writer Daniil Kharms was a well-known author of children's literature -- until he was arrested for treason in 1941 and left to die in his prison cell. Friends hid his vast secret body of work (including plays and short stories intended for adult audiences) until it was politically safe to release the works decades later. Part of the Emerging Theatre Company program at the Boston Center for the Arts, imaginary beasts now brings KNOCK! | The Daniil Kharms Project to the stage. An original piece created from a collection of Kharms' work, KNOCK! follows a troupe of madmen, fools and geniuses into a strange and comical world where a simple knock on the door can lead to redemption or the ultimate end. Bob, who’s not actually in the play, is going on his first date in two years. All of his manly inner attributes – Logic, Confidence, Nerves, Libido, and Bull – are gearing up for the event. Then a love-at-first-sight moment wakes long-sleeping Emotion, and she threatens to throw the night into chaos. If the men weren’t ready to handle Emotion, they’re certainly not prepared to take on the Memory of the woman who broke Bob’s heart.
