This celebration of family in all its combinations -- and all its joys and heartbreaks -- is highlighted by the regional premiere of a heartwarming one-act musical, Alexander's House, which tells the story of a gay man whose passing brings together friends, family and a long-lost son. Sons & Daughters also features Beneath the African Sky, an inspiring work about two young Rwandan sisters' search for their parents, along with music from Broadway classics Dreamgirls and Carousel, songs from the award-winning revue Closer Than Ever and a piece based on Khalil Gibran's poem "Your Children." October 6, 2013: Niu Niu, Yuki Beppu
This concert showcases two of the Boston area's most promising young musicians. 16-year-old pianist Niu Niu, currently studying at Walnut Hill School for the Arts, is an exclusive recording artist for EMI, the youngest ever signed to a major label at age 10. At age 12, he was the youngest pianist to record all of the Chopin Etudes. 16-year-old violinist Yuki Beppu, from Lexington, Massachusetts, will be appearing on the radio show for the second time; her first appearance on From the Top was taped in San Antonio, Texas in 2008. Yuki recently completed a year as a participant in From the Top’s Center for the Development of Arts Leaders, Boston, a program in which high school musicians develop leadership skills and use their musical talents to engage diverse audiences at community partner sites throughout Boston.
Boston’s very own national public radio hit series From the Top tapes live concerts at New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall. Be part of an exhilarating show featuring incredible performances by inspiring young talent.
Hosted by acclaimed concert pianist Christopher O’Riley, the show highlights the amazing performances, heart, and humor of our nation’s best young classical musicians ages 8–18, through music and interview segments. From the Top tapings are a great introduction to classical music for families.
This show runs approximately 90 minutes with no intermission, and is recommended for ages 7 and older.
