Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winner August Wilson's searing drama is set in the 1920s on the south side of Chicago, where a recording session for blues legend Ma Rainey and her band becomes an intense battle of wills between a hot-headed young trumpeter and veteran musicians -- and between Ma and her white record producers. This production celebrates the Huntington Theatre Company's close relationship with the late playwright, as it's now staged all ten plays of Wilson's Century Cycle. Representing Wilson's first Broadway triumph, the show starred Charles Dutton in its original run, won the 1985 Critics' Circle Award, and was nominated for both the Tony and Drama Desk Awards that year.

This was my least favorite of the August Wilson plays that I've seen. I found it to be slow and the characters not sympathetic, unlike his later plays.

This play was very provocative and deals with issues of racism in the twenties. In present day America the words may have changed but there is still underlying racism. Another message is that violence breeds violence. The play is very moving and certainly makes one think.
