The AIDS epidemic is escalating, the ozone layer is weakening and God has abandoned all mankind. This is the setting for Angels in America, Part Two: Perestroika, the conclusion to playwright Tony Kushner's Pulitzer- and Tony-winning masterpiece. Here, Kushner creates a cosmic-scale portrait of legendary characters, including ancient rabbis, blind revolutionaries, imaginary travel agents and, of course, angels, set against a backdrop of old relationships ending while new, unexpected ones begin, amid questions of morality, guilt and forgiveness. Joan’s extraordinary journey, her unbounded faith in God, and her passionate determination to enthrone a King; produces what many consider to be Shaw’s greatest play. Expect comic moments amidst the drama. Expect to be inspired, uncertain, dismayed. Above all, expect to recognize, in these characters of the year 1429, qualities and conflicts still crucially important in the world of 2008. Can a young person make a difference in the face of great adversity? Can women be called to the pulpit? Can women be leaders of men? Do we, even now, have the answer to Joan’s final questions: “Oh God, that madest this beautiful earth, when will it be ready to receive thy saints? How long, O Lord, how long?”
