For nearly 50 years, Boston Ballet has been one of the world's leading dance companies, performing a repertoire of classical, neo-classical and contemporary works from some of today's finest choreographers. For their upcoming performance Play With Fire, they will be presenting a trio of contemporary works: Sharp Side of Dark features large-scale architectural sets and a haunting lighting design; Bella Figura is tangibly sensual in its adoration and reverence towards the human body and contains partial nudity; Rooster is a hugely popular work by a British choreographer set to eight classic Rolling Stones songs. The dancers were remarkably skilled, dancing piece after piece without error and with amazing grace. The costumes were gorgeous and the venue stunning. It was a lovely holiday treat!

The dancers were lovely and it was a great story. It has been updated since I went when I was a kid, the stage settings were new and exciting.

It had been several years since I'd seen a production of The Nutcracker, and I was determined to get myself to the ballet this year! Everything was lovely -- the dancers, the exquisite costumes & sets, the music, all the excited little girls in the audience, and the Opera House itself, which was beautifully decorated. A wonderful evening that really put me in the Christmas spirit!

I did attend this event. I have to admit, I thought that the seats I had purchased were in a better location than they were. They were advertised as $100 seats that cost goldstar members $50. I brought my daughter for her 18th birthday and couldnt believe how far back our seats were located. There was also some woman who had not only her shoes off, but her socks too in the section next to me and the usher didnt say a thing to her. Not a good evening at all.

Quotes & Highlights

Description

Music: Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky
Choreography: Mikko Nissinen

Boston Ballet's The Nutcracker is a must-see holiday event for the whole family! Join Clara on her magical journey through an enchanted winter wonderland to a palace of sugary confections.

Karen Campbell wrote in The Boston Globe, “The Nutcracker provides a sugar rush into the holiday season. The company’s version of this beloved classic sports vivid, imaginative scenery, captivating special effects, substantive choreography and exquisite dancing.”

Mikko Nissinen’s The Nutcracker features the Boston Ballet company dancers and more than 250 children from Boston Ballet School, hailed last year as “adorable, focused and disciplined” handling serious pattern and partner work with “impressive aplomb.”

This holiday tradition has showcased Boston Ballet and Boston Ballet School’s artistry, technique and love for dance for more than 40 years and continues to delight Boston audiences.

These magnificent sets and costumes will be retired after 20 years on stage in Boston. The Nutcracker returns to the stage in 2012 with new sets and costumes!
