The first half was very good, but it got didactic towards the end. 15 minutes could be shaved off. it needs work, and tightening up, but the premiss is very good, well acted, an well staged.

This play takes on the difficult job of recounting history as drama, and does well with it. Harry and Rudi both come across as very real people, strengths and weaknesses and conflicting desires, which feed into their personal and political choices.

Description

By Jon Marans

Directed by Jeremy Johnson

This hit off-Broadway play tells the story of two men – the communist Harry Hay and the Viennese refugee and fashion designer Rudi Gernreich – as they fall in love while forming the first gay-rights organization in the pre-Stonewall United States. “Temperamental” was a necessary code word in the early 1950s – danger was always an underlying presence but with it, a heady, intoxicating secrecy also hung in the air.

Featuring:

Will McGarrahan (as Harry Hay)

Nael Nacer (as Rudi Gernreich)

Shelley Bolman

Steve Kidd

Victor Shopov
