The Tragedy of Carmen, A Powerful Adaptation, from Boston Midsummer Opera

Title: The Tragedy of Carmen
Venue: Tsai Performance Center at Boston University (Boston, MA)
Full Price: $50.00   Our Price: $25.00
Rating: 3.1 stars

Rated 3.1 by 10 members who went.

In this gripping adaptation of Bizet's famous late-19th century opera, all of Bizet's most celebrated music is retained, with a pared-down cast of four singers and three actors, and an orchestra of 15 players. Performed in a superb English translation by Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me), this is Carmen like you've never seen it before—intense, intimate and bitingly tragic.

Seats were fine. I liked some things about it - voices were excellent, orchestra fine. I think I prefer the original - not a condensed English language version~

Our seats were in the second row of the orchestra, which was wonderful. The music and singing were so great , it was overwhelming. I'm sure that I saw future starts of the world of opera.

i am used to attending the opera of the Philadelphia Opera Company or the Opera Company of Philadelphia. I thought the singers were so-so, certainly better than college students (they were aged in their 30s and 40s), but not true professional, in my opinion. the voices were fine in parts and then "let you down," by being not as strong in other parts. i thought Stephanie Chigas' acting was very good as Carmen, and i enjoyed the production. my seats through Goldstar were fantastic! i was leery about being off to the side somewhere, but these seats were great! i was very pleased. only downside was the $6 service fee. thought the service fee should have been half of that.
