A world-premiere work from Stephen Lias, the world's first "adventurer- composer," and solos from pianist Gabriela Martinez and violinist Charles Wetherbee highlight the 2014-15 season opening concert by the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. Inspired by his visits to U.S. National Parks like Denali, Rocky Mountain and others, Lias has written more than a dozen related pieces, including the Alaska-themed Gates of the Arctic. This sure-to-be-stirring performance is accompanied by stunning visual images of the area as well, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the American Wilderness Act. Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Martinez then joins the ensemble to play Saint-Saens' Piano Concerto No. 2. Breathlessly praised by conductor Gustavo Dudamel as "simply a genius," Martinez has quickly established herself as a virtuosa of compelling insight. Violinist Charles Wetherbee begins his first season as the orchestra's concertmaster and helps to provide a passionate finale, with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. Learn More
