The Magrath sisters - Lenny, Meg and Babe - face a day of reckoning in Crimes of the Heart, the Pulitzer-Prize winning Southern comedy by Beth Henley. Babe has shot her husband but is now out on bail. Meg escaped the family home in Hazelehurst, Mississippi, but is back after a failed singing career on the West coast, and Lenny is celebrating her 30th birthday by sticking a candle in a cookie and making desperate wishes. Meanwhile Grandpa, who raised the girls after their mother's sensational suicide, is laid up in the hospital, possibly forever. The darkly comic family drama ran for more than 500 performances on Broadway and was adapted into a movie with Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange and Sissy Spacek.

The play was very good. The cast was exceptionally well versed and did an excellent job.

I thought it was a little too long.

We have seen a number of productions at the Bowie Playhouse, but this was a standout. The play is both poignant and funny, and the acting was professional. Especially convincing was the the three sisters' "mean girl" cousin. The actor who played the lawyer would be right at home in a John Gresham movie. Definitely worth seeing!
