Femme Fatale is a multimedia show combining song, dance and vintage film clips starring The Manhattan Transfer's Alan Paul's protege Laura Ellis leading the way on a nostalgic journey to a time of seedy lounges, gumshoes and hapless guys falling for the wrong dame. Backed by her jazz noir band, Ellis sings songs like "That Old Black Magic," "Put the Blame on Mame" and "Temptation" to tell and original film noir story with music and classic film clips.

Great laid back 40's style jazz, the real stuff. Takes you back to the days of a byegone era, byegone before my time. Incredible quartet and Laura Ellis can sing that era's music, all the while shaking her thing.

Would have given it a four star but the sound system kept going out. It was a cute show especially if you knew the older songs and movie characters.

The performance was well done and original. An old noir movie (black & white, I think it was call Detour) was shown on the screen and it when seamlessly back and forth from the movie to Laura Ellis's performance. Her costumes were true to the era as was her style of singing. Her voice was perfect for the "role". She must have studied a lot of the movements of the "femme fatales" of that era.

I also liked the fact that before the performance began, there was background music of the famous jazz singers -- especially Billy Holliday.
but it was realy more that I expected.

It was thoroughly entertaining. I would highly recommend it to not only jazz lovers but also film noir buffs. Great job!

Quotes & Highlights

  • “…harkens to mind the classic jazz greats of old” --Jazz Ambassador Magazine
  • "Laura Ellis has an exceptional talent.  Her voice has a soothing warmth likened to an alto flute and a sensuality and intimacy in her performance that makes one feel she is singing only to them.” --Alan Paul, The Manhattan Transfer

Description

Protégé of The Manhattan Transfer’s Alan Paul, Laura Ellis captures the rich tones and delivery of jazz greats in an original film-noir story of intrigue, double-cross, feminine wiles and fabulous songs. Fans know Laura Ellis from her appearances with the '50s vocal group, The Wonderelles, her TV soundtrack recordings and her celebrated CD Here Lies Love. Backed by her jazz noir band, Ms. Ellis sings in a voice filled with radiance and pure luster while film clips of the 1940's and 1950's, transport you back to the days of seedy lounges, gumshoes, and hapless guys, falling for the wrong dame. Songs like "That Old Black Magic," "Put the Blame on Mame," "Temptation" and more weave a musical tale of deception straight from the movie genre of film noir. A warm and intimate evening for lovers of jazz and classic film.
