For Brooklyn, it was well worth it - the acts were entertaining, it ended at a decent time, and I would DEFINITELY come back if they do it again...

I really enjoyed the show. The usual crowd was there and the weather was perfect for a great Friday night in Coney Island. TOO BAD the fireworks distracted from the last performance; I think Rob Albanese could have scheduled the acts better as to not distract our attention from the group. They should have postponed their performance a few minutes till AFTER the fireworks were over or else begin the show close to the actual planned start right from the get go!

My 2 friends and I had a great time...Coney Island was a perfect backdrop for this type of music (under the boardwalk)...If you like oldies, you will defintely enjoy yourself at this event. The seats were in the last row but that didn't hinder our ability to see and hear everything-in fact, it let us stand up and dance to the music.

It was enjoyable. Not all of it was Doo-Wop. I saw one of the groups a number of years ago, and I don't believe they've made any changes to their act, so I don't know if I would go again next year. But I am glad that I went, and so were my friend. It was also very easy to get there from Manhattan by public transportation.

Description

Charlie Thomas' Drifters
Unfortunately, today there are only two Drifters still living. Ben E. King who like Clyde McPhatter went solo after a short while with the Drifters and of course the only voice on all the Drifters recordings since 1958, the voice of Charlie Thomas.

Todays's group includes the following: Charlie Thomas, born April 7, 1937. He has been in show business for fifty years, first singing gospel and a short stint with the Orioles, joined the Five Crowns and then in 1958 the Drifters. Jerone Manning who Charlie found in a local club in York, Pa. singing Drifters songs. Steven Brown from York, Pa. who sang with Sunburst before joining the Drifters. And Louis Bailey also from York, Pa. who is the son of the famous tap dancer Bill Bailey and the nephew of the Great Pearl Bailey.

The group today tours throughout the world as Charlie Thomas' Drifters in order to be distinquishable from the many fake groups claiming to be The Drifters. The only real Drifter still doing The Drifters greatest hits is Charlie Thomas.

Jay Siegel & The Tokens

Young men singing Doo Wop in high school bathrooms and on street corners across New York City was hardly extraordinary in the late 50s and early 60s. What is extraordinary, though, is the incredible feat that one of those groups from Brooklyn has accomplished.

First breaking onto the pop charts in 1961, The Tokens got back on the charts in the 1990s and were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall Of Fame in 2004.

The Tokens continue to distinguish themselves with the second-longest chart span in the history of Rock & Roll. More than 30 years after the debut of their first big hit, "Tonight I Fell in Love", they re-emerged on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart in August, 1994, following the re-release of their chart-topping single, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." Making the statistic even more impressive, the South African folk song "Wimoweh," which inspired The Tokens’ song that went to #1 worldwide, first charted 42 years earlier. No other song title can claim that longevity.

The release of the Disney motion picture The Lion King prompted RCA to re-release "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and a CD featuring a unique compilation of twenty of The Tokens' earlier tunes. It gives their fans a rare opportunity to enjoy The Tokens, both for the original songs they wrote and the songs by other artists that The Tokens later recorded in their own distinctive style.

The Tokens were one of the first and youngest groups to independently produce recordings for a major label, breaking into the really big-time in 1962, when they became the first vocal group to produce a #1 record for another vocal group (remember "He's So Fine" by The Chiffons?) That was the first of many smash hits Jay and his group had a hand in producing. They became the production geniuses behind numerous other hits by The Chiffons, as well as the biggest hits by Tony Orlando and Dawn, The Happenings, Randy and the Rainbows, and Robert John. While many know that the group Dawn was named by Jay after one of his daughters, it's a lesser known fact that Jay and two session singers actually were the group on Orlando's first album! He and The Tokens also sang backup vocals for such diverse artists as Del Shannon, Melissa Manchester, Connie Francis, The Blues Project, Keith, Mac Davis, Al Kooper & Bob Dylan.

Besides leaving their imprint on the pop music scene as singers, songwriters, arrangers, producers, and record executives,
Jay Siegel & The Tokens were successes as writers, producers, and singers of commercials, reminding us that "Pan Am makes the going great...," "Ban won't wear off as the day...," and that Chesterfields are a “Silly Millimeter Longer". They were also the voices for Clairol, General Foods, Wrigley's gum, Eastern Airlines, Cool Whip and Wendy's.

That style and sound, of course, is elegantly defined by Jay Siegel, whose tenor lead and trademark falsetto have characterized all The Tokens' music since the group began recording, and continues to do so today as they perform around the country. The group consists of Bill Reid & Jay Traynor (He was the original "Jay" of The Americans, who sang the lead vocal on "She Cried").

Jay Siegel & The Tokens are truly one of the pop music scene's most versatile, talented and enduring groups.

John Kuse & The Excellents

The original Bronx based group was first formed in 1960 as The Premiers. In June of 1961, " Red Red Robin ", and a remake of the Jesters 1957 classic " Love No One  But You " were recorded and issued on Mermaid records.

In January 1962, their signature smash hit "Coney Island Baby " was arranged, and released as the B-side of their version of the Cleftones 1955 hit  "You Baby You." Both songs were recorded in February 1962, and released on Blast records in April of that year.

"Coney Island Baby" is truly a favorite among connoisseurs of fine music. Year after year, The Excellents are considered one of doo-wop lover's favorite groups.

The group continues to wow audiences wherever they perform. Their unique vocal style , close high harmonies, and song selections, are crowd pleasers. The Excellents were invited to perform live on PBS Channel 13 to help launch "Doowop 51". Doowop 51 was recorded live in Pittsburgh, PA in front of 2,700 enthusiastic fans. This year 2007, the Group was part of "Doowop Love Songs" which was filmed at the Ritz theatre in Elizabeth, NJ. The Group again performed live on PBS Channel 13.

The group is comprised of vocalists: Original lead singer and first tenor, John Kuse, Mal Bruntvedt, John Accardo and Joe Noto. And the terrific backup band: Keith Dibuduo (Bass Guitar ), Roger Andersen (Keyboards), Dino Piarulli (Drums ), Ron (Rooster) Crawford on Saxophone, and Steve Raimer (Musical Director and Lead Guitar).

Emil Stucchio & The Classics
Emil Stucchio and The Classics' unique style puts them in a class of their own. They received their recording contract in 1959 and their first release "Cinderella" hit the national Top 100.

They have received national acclaim for their top-selling CDs. Intimate Reflections is a collection of beautiful standards, featuring "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" and "Somewhere". Their Gold Dust CD includes their own songs, along with "Cara Mia" and "You'll Never Know". Embracing the rich music of their grandparents, La Musica D'Italia offers these great Italian favorites: "Statte Vicino Amme", "O Solo Mio" and "Mala Femmina". Their latest CD, Club Illusion, is a collection of all-time favorites, including "Old Songs", "Hungry Years", "For Your Love", "Hurt" and "Wildflower".

The foundation of The Classics is the outstanding original lead voice of Emil Stucchio. Completing the circle of style and blend are Al Contrera (featured on "When You're Smiling" from Club Illusion) and Teresa McClean, lead voice on "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me". To the pleasure of their many fans, Teresa and Emil sing together in "You've Got What It Takes" and "Since I Don't Have You/Only Make Believe", both found on Club Illusion. Their popularity has continued to grow as shown by a recent radio survey, where they were voted 6th most popular out of 500.

With over 50 years of entertainment experience and excellent vocal talents, The Classics continue to receive rave reviews from audiences and producers from coast to coast, including Atlantic City and Las Vegas. The addition of an Italian show adds to the versatility of The Classics, along with the songs and humor, for which they are noted. From Fifties to Standards, from Italian to today's sounds, their shows, complete with outrageous comedy routines, are professional in every way. The Classics add a special touch to every show. They are truly a class act.
