a new play

A meditation on—among other things—whether violence can ever be justified, and if so, what limits are there and where does it end?
An American woman who considers herself a patriot has committed a horrible, murderous, terrorist act on US soil as an act of protest and, she hopes, revolution against the United States Government, which she believes no longer represents the law, people, and Constitution of the USA. She finds herself in a room where she is questioned for days by a man and a woman—who may, in fact be the same person and who could be either a medical doctor or a military general.
As she is interrogated, her mind, which may or may not be sane, reinterprets her surroundings into a chorus of voices—witches, revolutionaries, bossmen, old boyfriends, fragments of herself—arguing over the validity of her violent actions while at the same time trying to deny that the monstrous act has ever occurred, or that she could be capable of such a thing, and trying to reveal her beliefs while at the same time keeping her true self a deep secret.
Spell. A play for this time of many frustrating questions with no good answers. A story for those who want to want peace but have violence in their hearts. A patriotic scream. An examination of a serious mental disorder. An incantation. A length of time.
Ian W. Hill has created 56 stage productions since 1997 with his company Gemini CollisionWorks, including works by Richard Foreman, T.S. Eliot, Clive Barker, Mac Wellman, Ronald Tavel, Jeff Goode, Mark Spitz, and Edward D. Wood, Jr., as well as several original plays. As a designer (light, sound, projections, sets) and technical/artistic consultant he has worked with many other stage artists and theatres for almost 20 years, and he is currently the technical director of The Brick. He will also be presenting two other plays in rep with Spell in August at The Brick: Harry in Love by Richard Foreman and another original work, Everything Must Go.
The cast of this production is Olivia Baseman*, Fred Backus, Jorge Cordova*, Gavin Starr Kendall, Samantha Mason, Iracel Rivero, Alyssa Simon*, Moira Stone*, Liz Toft, Jeanie Tse, and Rasha Zamamiri.
About the Ticket Supplier: The Brick Theater
The Brick and its company, The Brick Theater, Inc., were founded in 2002 by Robert Honeywell and Michael Gardner. Formerly an auto-body shop, a yoga center, and various storage spaces, this brick-walled garage in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, was completely refurbished as a state-of-the-art performance space.
The Brick has been home to many critically acclaimed premieres, including Memoirs of My Nervous Illness, Bizarre Science Fantasy, Tupperware Orgy, In a Strange Room (based on Faulkner's As I Lay Dying), Dear Dubya, Fallout Follies, World Gone Wrong, My Year of Porn, Who Is Wilford Brimley?, Jenna Is Nuts, Habitat, Absence of Magic, Assyrian Monkey Fantasy (in two movements), and The Pragmatists.
The Summer Theme Festival Series presented The Hell Festival in 2004, The Moral Values Festival in 2005, The $ellout Festival in 2006, and continues with The Pretentious Festival in Summer 2007. In addition, The Brick has also produced a short-works program called Brick-a-Brac, a collection of holiday-themed one-act plays known as The Baby Jesus One-Act Jubilee, and the hugely successful New York Clown Theatre Festival (the first of its kind in New York in more than 20 years).
