Bryn Mawr Film Institute presents a screening of Dead Man. Released in 1995, Jim Jarmusch's revisionist "acid western" stars Johnny Depp as William Blake, a mild-mannered accountant traveling across a surreal version of the American frontier. The film also features Gary Farmer, Gabriel Byrne, John Hurt, Alfred Molina, Robert Mitchum (in his final film role), Crispin Glover, Billy Bob Thornton and Iggy Pop, and features an improvised soundtrack by Neil Young. The film has attracted rave critical reviews, with Greil Marcus calling it "the best movie of the end of the 20th century" and The New York Times' A.O. Scott describing it as "one of the very best movies of the 1990s." This screening is presented in conjunction with Bryn Mawr's film course Stranger than Paradise: The Films of Jim Jarmusch, and will be introduced by the course's instructor, film critic and author Chris Long.

Description

Jim Jarmusch’s revisionist “acid western” follows a mild-mannered accountant, William Blake (Johnny Depp), as he travels across the frontier. Tracing both Blake’s physical and spiritual journeys, this is considered the ultimate postmodern western.

Dead Man is shown in conjunction with Bryn Mawr Film Institute’s film course Stranger than Paradise: The Films of Jim Jarmusch and will be introduced by its instructor, film critic and author Chris Long, M.A.

Dead Man is rated R, runs 2 hr 1 min, and will be shown on 35mm. The film also stars Gary Farmer, Gabriel Byrne, John Hurt, Alfred Molina, and Robert Mitchum.
