Neil Simon's beloved buddy comedy of hilariously mismatched roommates comes to the Camarillo Skyway Playhouse. When slovenly sportswriter Oscar Madison takes in his neurotic neat freak friend Felix Ungar after Felix's wife throws him out, all comic hell breaks loose. The two men get into increasingly heated squabbles over the state of Oscar's apartment, and a hilarious double date with the attractive Pigeon sisters comes to an unexpected and comedic conclusion. Debuting on Broadway in 1965, the Tony Award-winning comedy inspired a movie starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, a TV series starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman, and countless revivals on stages around the world. Cute theater. The show was okay. The singing fell flat at times and the choreography needed some help. A few of the back ground cast members seemed to really lack enthusiasm. It made me wonder if they even wanted to be there. Overall, it was a fair attempt. The talent was apparent but,the chemistry between the cast wasn't.
During the time when De Silva’s concept was taking shape, the High School for the Performing Arts underwent its own major transformation. In 1984, the school merged with the High School of Music and Art to create what is now known as the Fiorello La Guardia School of the Arts. The new school, much larger and somewhat less personal than it’s predecessor, was relocated to a modern facility adjacent to the Lincoln Center. De Silva chose to use the final years of the old landmark building as the time frame for his new musical, following the progress of the last class to graduate.
