Once began as a music-fueled indie film that won the nation's heart in 2006, taking home the Best Original Song Oscar for its haunting love ballad "Falling Slowly." Now, Once has taken the Broadway stage by storm, earning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The romantic tale follows a downtrodden Dublin street musician and a delightfully quirky Czech woman who meet in the least likely of places -- a vacuum cleaner repair shop. Their complicated lives make the path to love a rocky one, and they channel their feelings into the music they produce together -- him on guitar, her on piano, two voices harmonizing and setting them free, for a time, from the harsh realities of their lives. Cute theater. The show was okay. The singing fell flat at times and the choreography needed some help. A few of the back ground cast members seemed to really lack enthusiasm. It made me wonder if they even wanted to be there. Overall, it was a fair attempt. The talent was apparent but,the chemistry between the cast wasn't.
During the time when De Silva’s concept was taking shape, the High School for the Performing Arts underwent its own major transformation. In 1984, the school merged with the High School of Music and Art to create what is now known as the Fiorello La Guardia School of the Arts. The new school, much larger and somewhat less personal than it’s predecessor, was relocated to a modern facility adjacent to the Lincoln Center. De Silva chose to use the final years of the old landmark building as the time frame for his new musical, following the progress of the last class to graduate.
