What happens when a bunch of New England's best conservatory-trained musicians, dancers and actors decide to put on a late-night dance-club show? You get something like AcousticaElectronica, where classical collides with electronic to create an all-new visual and aural spectacle. It starts with live musicians playing the work of established and up-and-coming composers, joined onstage by The WIG, a classically trained, New York-based DJ. The dancers bring in their blend of ballet, jazz and modern movement, while the aerialists wow the audience with their artistic fly-overs. This toUch performance art production also features pre- and post-show sets from a number of Boston's hottest DJs.

The Donkey Show: A Midsummer's Night Disco, Theatrical Dance Party

Full Price:
$25.00
Our Price:
$10.00 - $12.50

The disco-fueled interactive dance party known as The Donkey Show, loosely inspired by Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, puts you smack in the middle of the action as the funky lounge setting, featuring two full bars and a dance floor, also serves as the show's stage. The Diane Paulus-created wonderland was inspired by Studio 54 in its heyday when celebrities and art icons would mix and mingle with kids from Queens, and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack would be shaking the speakers. While the audience drinks, dances to disco classics or just checks out the action, the motley crew of characters in this glammed-up, sexed-fueled version of Shakespeare's play re-enact the hilariously chaotic tale of a magic elixir that wreaks havoc at the nightclub. I liked this show quite a bit! It was a bit of a slow starter but it really built up and had some amazing performances. The Hula Hoop and rope performer was especially talented. I'm always a big fan of the interactive nature of the shows at this venue and have been to a number of them.

This starts with 1 hour of dance to Electronic Dance Music. The songs started to sound repetitive after that. The only classical musician I saw were 1 opera singer, 1 pianist and 1 guitar player. Even during the fusion pieces the electronic music was turned up so loud the musician may as well as not be there. The only song I could hear well was Carmen by the opera singer, and that is because there was no electronic music backup for the first 2 minutes, then the music came in. It sounded to me everything could have been pre-recordered and because they are all original music, they all sounded the same. The event went from 1030 to 1230am and dance party last until 2am I was ready to leave at 1230am.

It's an awesome eletronic dance performance party. WIG is high-energy and you can tell he loves spinning tunes and watching the audience enjoy his music and experience. I didn't stop dancing all night.

Description

Choreography by Elizabeth McGuire
Directed by Marissa Rae Roberts
Produced by Colin Thurmond

AcousticaElectronica
presents some of the most innovative music from well-established and hot up-and-coming producers and composers. Bach meets a dance club back-beat, Carmen’s habanera meets techno, and Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata blends with trance for a listening experience unlike anything you have ever heard before.

This ultimate dance party becomes an immersive experience for the audience. Dancers, symphonies, aerialists, operas, live musicians all happen around every inch of the space to keep the audience guessing at every turn. A classical world becomes the technicolor world of the dance club as the audience escapes from their real lives to experience a night of dream, abandon, and ecstasy…

Strobe lights are used at this performance.
