A daring response to the centuries-old taboo of women playing the djembe in West Africa, NIMBAYA! is the first all-women's percussion and dance troupe from Guinea. The group, formerly known as Amazones Women Master Drummers of Guinea, was created in 1998 by Mamoudou Condé of Les Ballets Africains fame. Presenting spectacular performances, NIMBAYA! "plays with a fury, pounding out heart-racing rhythms and dancing into near frenzies" according to The Boston Globe. They're in demand around the world, as much for their spectacular choreographies as for their fiery rhythms. The artists in the group come from the most difficult of living conditions, and by participating in this renowned group are breaking free of the financially hopeless lifestyle imposed upon them by society while bringing audiences to their feet in appreciation.

So much talen, energy and enthusiasm filled the theatre. It was wonde3rful to see the audience dancing and the liveliness of the children in attendance. I did not understand the throwing of dollar bills on the stage and found this in bad taste. The notion of the obnoxious American!
