Catalyst Collaborative@MIT presents Gioia De Cari's hit solo show about her experiences in the exotic boys club of higher mathematics at M.I.T., including being pawed by nerds, asked to serve cookies at a seminar and retaliating with fashion experiments. Playing more than 30 roles herself, De Cari not only taps into the comic absurdity of her experiences, but also more seriously explores the world of elite mathematics and the role of women in science.

Photograph 51 Asks: Who Really Discovered DNA?

Full Price:
$40.00 - $45.00
Our Price:
$20.00 - $22.50

The Nora Theatre Company presents Photograph 51 at Central Square Theatre. In 1951, British biophysicist Rosalind Franklin became a research associate at King's College in London. It was her X-ray imaging that revealed DNA's double helix structure, leading to the 1962 Nobel Prize, which went to James Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins. Told with wit and urgency by a chorus of scientists who relive the competitive chase to be the first to map the DNA molecule, Photograph 51 is the story of a fiercely independent and ambitious young scientist and her unsung, trailblazing achievements. It also provides an unflinching look at sexism, ethics and scientific collaboration. The play won the 2008 Stage International Script Competition for Best New Play About Science & Technology. The setting was great ... alll seats had good views; we would return to that theater. We were both looking forward to the biting edge of MIT's unique sense of humor; we also expected to see situations more subtle and specific to MIT than cookies and unwelcome sexual overtures ... While we were disappointed to find neither, it was still fun to be out and seeing an actress take on the challenge of her craft.

I really liked the play and the theater was just fine for me, as we were sitting in the 2nd row. It would have been good to know in advance that it was general seating (no specified seats) so we might have come in earlier. But I loved the presentation -- both the actress and the material. And because the play is set at MIT and was performed near MIT, the people in the row in front of us were all MIT woman, and the woman in back of us actually turned out to be someone whom one of the characters in the play was based on! I had a blast and recommend it!

I found the concept of this show intriguing so I took my wife and daughter, she 3 years out of Smith College with a degree in Chemistry. Unfortunately, we arrived just before the show started and did not realize the theatre was an empty room with what appeared to be temporary stadium seating and no reserved seats at all. We managed to find 3 seats together but we were literally at the furthest point in the room from the actor. As there was no microphone used, at times it was impossible to understand what she was saying, especially when she put on an accent to speak as someone else. Very dissappointed in the accoustics and the theatre. Parts were funny but not hilarious. Too somber when she talked about her father. I'm sure the people who got there earlier and had better seats had a different take on the show.
