- Our Price:

The quirky world of middle-school spelling competitions takes center stage in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a hilarious, Tony Award-winning musical about six awkward would-be spelling champions and their even less well-adjusted parents. Staged by award-winning director Sue Ellen Nelsen, Chanticleers Theatre's new production of this Broadway hit features a delightful cast and loads of laughs, as the musical numbers and polysyllabic words fly. Who will win -- and who will learn the valuable lesson that winning isn't everything? And can you use "capybara" in a sentence? The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee spells fun for all (though some mild references to adult topics may not be appropriate for very young audience members). Learn More

We loved this show....Neil Simon at his witty best, dealing with real life issues, tough ones with marital and parental problems, and exciting ones with career and love relationship dreams being fulfilled. Great acting, staging and the pre-show piano entertainment was wonderful. Go see it! There's no bad seat in the house.Written on Jul 27 2010

The show was great! The actors were all very professional. I felt as if I was right there with them. I will say be very careful at intermission, I was hit in the head with the script of the show by the director. Someone won a copy of the script behind me, and instead of handing it to the winner he threw it from the stage and it hit me in the head. It could have hit me in the eye if I were to have looked up at the right time. Yes I raised hell, and was very annoyed. I'm just glad it wasn't a senior member of the audience, which was 99% of the house.Written on Aug 09 2010

I really enjoyed the play. This was my first time to this playhouse. The actors played their parts well. The costumes and set were to the period of time.Written on Aug 04 2010
Three things I would have changed to make the play more fluid and truthful were One, the simulation of opening a front door on the set. I knew there was a front door there but, the actors would still turn a fake doorknob and walk in and out. It was a distraction for me. Two, when Eugene turns on the "tube" radio and the music comes right on before "the dance" scene between Eugene and Kate, (when a scene before Stanley was complaining that the radio was taking to long to warm up). Last, after the "the dance" scene when Kate becomes uncomfortable she should have dashed over and turned off the radio then sat down to refocus herself.

Excellent acting across the boardWritten on Aug 09 2010
One of Neil Simon's most adult works - quite a lot of important themes going on. Much more than just clever jokes. Congrats to Sue Trigg and the rest of the cast!

Description
Time Magazine named Broadway Bound the Best Play of the 1980s. The New York Post described it as "the most successful non-musical play in Broadway history." It has the rare combination of being laugh-out-loud funny, deeply poignant, and offering food for thought.
It's the story of three generations of people's dreams: Should two brothers pursue a career as comedy writers? Should a midlife couple stay together? Can a 77 year old accept that his dream of a socialist America won't happen in his lifetime?
