The quirky world of middle-school spelling competitions takes center stage in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a hilarious, Tony Award-winning musical about six awkward would-be spelling champions and their even less well-adjusted parents. Staged by award-winning director Sue Ellen Nelsen, Chanticleers Theatre's new production of this Broadway hit features a delightful cast and loads of laughs, as the musical numbers and polysyllabic words fly. Who will win -- and who will learn the valuable lesson that winning isn't everything? And can you use "capybara" in a sentence? The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee spells fun for all (though some mild references to adult topics may not be appropriate for very young audience members). Learn More

I really hate to give this rating but it was so far under what we have come to enjoy at Chanticleers. I know that in the program they explained why the stage was set the way it was but it was too distracting. The stage hands that changed scenery did not seem to know what they were doing and on more than one occasion walked around backstage wher eyou could easily see them from the audience while the play was going on. We sat right in front of the light/control room and you could often hear them talking in that room even had music coming from there that was different than what was playing on stage. The lighting was often not shining where it was suppose to be. There just was not a lot of detail to stage set - curtains backwards, lights burned out that should not have been and stage hands being way too visible. We were there the second weekend, so it wasn't first night jitters. But in leaving it on a positive - we loved the young man that did the tap dancing!!Written on Nov 02 2010

Oy I hate to give a negative review but it was too long and very slow.Written on Nov 09 2010
The orchestra was fair and the singing was fair. The dancing was at lest
fun to watch. Mama Rose had a good voice and sang well, both the Junes sang poorly. I and my party of 5 could not make it to the 2nd act.
Perhaps it picked up????

Sadly, this production was lacking in so many aspects, from weak acting, singing & dancing (except for the boy playing Tulsa), to a less than adequate orchestra. The sets were, well, unprofessional as were the crew changing the sets. Lighting left a great deal to be desired. It felt like it was a rehearsal gone bad. We appreciate that this is community theatre. However, having seen many, many community theatre productions in the Bay Area over many years, this one proved to be a weak link. We hope for the best for this well established theatre group in the future. They may want to look beyond the tried & true when it comes to filling the stage.Written on Nov 08 2010

Cute but unpolished as expected from an amateurish cast. I admire their commitment and enthusiasm. It should be promoted as a high school play with some assistance from adults. Nothing and nobody shines in this performance except for the young tap dancer who is very good.Written on Nov 01 2010

Description
Gypsy (written by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim) is based on the 1957 memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous striptease artist, and focuses on her mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with “the ultimate show business mother.” Memorable musical numbers include “Small World,” “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” “You’ll Never Get Away from Me,” and “Let Me Entertain You.”
Director Al Fink, musical director Michael Keating and choreographer Lori Beth Eisenstadt, the team behind last seasons Fiddler On The Roof, are back to mount another big show. In fact, director Fink has cast over 25 actors to grace the intimate stage and work behind the scenes at Chanticleers, including multiple members of eight different families from local communities.
