The quirky world of middle-school spelling competitions takes center stage in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, a hilarious, Tony Award-winning musical about six awkward would-be spelling champions and their even less well-adjusted parents. Staged by award-winning director Sue Ellen Nelsen, Chanticleers Theatre's new production of this Broadway hit features a delightful cast and loads of laughs, as the musical numbers and polysyllabic words fly. Who will win -- and who will learn the valuable lesson that winning isn't everything? And can you use "capybara" in a sentence? I really enjoyed the movie with Mr. James Stewart. The Chanticleers did a great job with the stage version of Harvey. The stage set and costumes were great and the actors did a great job with all their parts. The lead was so funny. What an enjoyable evening. Thanks to all...

Description

Harvey by Mary Coyle Chase has been an American favorite since it was first brought to the Broadway stage in 1944. The play was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for drama and its initial run lasted for four years and 1,775 performances.

Since then, it has continually been revived around the globe. In 1950, it was also adapted to film, starring Hollywood legend James Stewart, and has become one of Stewart’s best-loved films.

The Story
The story is about Elwood P. Dowd, a good-natured, mild-mannered eccentric, known in all of the local eateries and saloons in his small town. Elwood is polite, cheerful and always friendly toward any strangers he might encounter. Elwood has just one problematic character trait: his best friend is an invisible six-foot-tall pooka rabbit named Harvey.

Wherever he goes, Elwood carries an extra hat and coat for Harvey. He buys theater tickets and railroad tickets in twos so they can go everywhere together.

A hilarous comedy of errrors ensues when Elwood's sister and her daughter decide to have Elwood committed to the local sanitarium. The behavior of the psychologist and his staff raise the penetrating question of who is actually more dangerous to society: the easy-going dreamer with a vivid imagination or the people who want him to conform to the accepted version of reality.

Directed by Eric Frashier Hayes, Artistic Director for Danville's Role Players Ensemble Theatre

Playing Elwood P Dowd is Keith Jefferds who was in last season's Lion in Winter, Loralee Windsor as Veta Louise, Dawn Cates as Myrtle Mae, Vanessa Comfort as Nurse Kelly, Charles Woodson Parker as Dr. Sanderson, Peter Richman as Dr. Chumley, Marsha Howard as Betty Chumley and Mrs. Chauvenet, Abe Bernstein as Judge Gaffney, and Bill Clemente as Wilson and the Cab Driver.
