It's "comedy tonight" in Stephen Sondheim's laugh-out-loud musical, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Travel with Heritage Players to ancient Rome and experience the zany antics of Pseudolus, a slave on a quest for freedom. This slapstick musical sings and dances its way through mistaken identities, a house full of courtesans and an elaborate web of lies that all lead to an uproarious night in the theater. The winner of six Tony Awards, this is one of the funniest musicals ever written. Sondheim and comic writer Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H, Tootsie) seamlessly combine situations from the timeless comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the fast-paced, slapstick energy of classic vaudeville to create a nonstop entertainment extravaganza. The auditorium was packed on Saturday night. The snacks, especially the carrot cake, were delicious. In the first act I loved the number from the Girl In Apartment 14G. She could sing and she had a lot of personality. The male opera singer who followed her was also very good.
After the intermission the show got much stronger. Enjoyed almost every number in the second half. Loved the closing song!
