Report as inappropriateIncredible show that would be enjoyed and marveled about by anyone. My wife and I were delighted throughout and our 6 and 8 year old grandsons were totally enthralled the entire time. The performance is amazingly high energy, fantastically creative, and fun with some thought-provoking aspects.
Report as inappropriateTotally unknown and we are totally missing out; Adventure Stage Chicago is something to see!!
The theater Vittum, is the performing space for Adventure Stage Chicago and located in West Town neighborhood, the theater is part of the Northwestern University Settlement House. It's a 299 seat theater and is named after Harriet Elizabeth Vittum, head resident of the Settlement House from 1907 to 1947. Apparently she was an advocated for the dramatic and musical arts; she believed they empower self-expression and self-worth. Their motto at Vittum is "Redefining Children's Theatre" and they certainly do that. As for the Vittum itself, it is super clean and the seats are more comfortable then most of the theaters I frequent. Also, the staff is friendly and is very laid back.
They host a variety of plays, dance, and a vaudevillian type acts, but they also have workshops and camps. Though they are mostly for kids since it's mostly a children's theater but you can check it out for yourself on their website at http://www.adventurest.../
As for the play/ act... Vittum hosts a 500 Clown production of "Trapped"
500 Clown is a production company that uses action-based performance, improvisation, and circus arts to tell long-form dramatic stories that catapult the performers into physical and emotional risk. "Trapped" is about three clown-musicians who are unexpectedly ensnared. They ask the question "What does it mean to be trapped" before the show and after, having a discussion on the different ways the actors were trapped. Of course I acted like a little kid when I knew the answers, waving my hand waiting to be picked. The show is non-stop fun and you are exhausted for the actors. They run around the stage and even seating area the entire show. It's hilarious and a treat for the imagination!!
Go see it!! Support the arts!!
Report as inappropriateIt was highly enjoyable and great entertainment for all ages. There were a couple parts where it bogged down a bit and I found my attention drifting, but they were short-lived and then it was back on track for more laughter and fun times.
Report as inappropriateThis is a very unique show and fair to say not for everyone. It is written in a way that is reminiscent of the non-linear way children play. Think back to when your imagination could run wild and something as simple as a pencil could seamlessly morph into a submarine, an airplane or a monster in your pretend mind. Put that energy on a large stage and you have Trapped.
The slapstick is subtle, the performance is very physical and the "clowns" are outstanding at conveying a range of emotions with minimal dialog. These are not your stereotypical circus clowns so best to get that image out of your head right away.
This is one show that you want to have children in the audience as their giggles and squeals of delight only add to the ambiance. Yet, this show's topic runs much deeper than some circus routine and is presented in a way that even the kids get it.
The 3 performers (there are not 500) do a great job of interacting with the audience before and after the show. I recommend to go early and stay late to take advantage of this.
If you are a stuffy theater-goer looking for a Broadway caliber show, this is not for you. If you enjoy innovative, imaginative theater, are willing to let your imagination run free and have some fun being a kid again, this is one you shouldn't miss.

Description
Conceived by 500 Clown Producing Artistic Director Adrian Danzig
Directed by Paola Coletto
Starting the show in the guise of musicians, three clowns explore what it truly means to be trapped…and to be set free. Who sets these traps? Who benefits from them? Are they even real? Using slapstick mishaps, vaudevillian turns and untiring resilience, the clowns struggle to move beyond their own limitations as they search for the answers they need.
Adrian Danzig was driven to create 500 Clown Trapped because 500 Clown has been asked for a decade if it does children's shows, and the answer has always been a resounding NO. But at a certain point, the 500 Clown members began to ask themselves…why not? Why not create a show specifically aimed at breaking the boundaries of age-based theater? (Why not humbly and excitedly stand atop the awesome shoulders of Looney Tunes, Chaplin and Keaton?) These questions, combined with a deep inquiry into the roots of traditional red-nose clown, are the foundation for this new work.
The partnership between 500 Clown and Adventure Stage Chicago sprang from a mutual affinity between two men as people, parents and artists. Danzig and Adventure Stage Producing Artistic Director Tom Arvetis first met as fathers in a cooperative child care center, so creative parenting and playful learning are at the heart of their relationship. The huge knowledge and high level of integrity that Adventure Stage has about shows for younger audiences provided 500 Clown a perfect opportunity for collaboration and experimentation.
500 Clown creates evening-length clown-theater performances using physical actions, improvisation and circus arts to tell dramatic stories. Its mission is to create a charged environment at each performance that allows performers and audience to celebrate the unpredictable power of the moment. Since 2000, 500 Clown has created 500 Clown Macbeth, 500 Clown Frankenstein, 500 Clown Christmas and 500 Clown and the Elephant Deal. Its productions tour throughout the United States, and the company teaches regularly in Chicago and on the road.
500 Clown Trapped is recommended for ages 5 and up. (Please note that children under age 5 will not be permitted in the theater.)
