Chicago Children's Theatre presents Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia's A Brown Bear, a Moon and a Caterpillar: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle. Following in the very successful footsteps of its recent The Very Hungry Caterpillar, this new Mermaid Theatre production combines legendary children's book author-illustrator Eric Carle's beloved stories and characters with evocative music, stunning visual effects and innovative puppetry. This time out, the aforementioned caterpillar, the adventurous animals from Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?, and the young girl from Papa Please Get the Moon for Me all join in on the fun in an hour-long triple-bill that both educates and entertains.

Full Price:
$25.00
Our Price:

The innovative dance theater group known as Chicago Dance Crash mixes their unique blend of high-energy hip hop, ballet, jazz, swing, acrobatics, break-dancing and more to tell a Prohibition Era love story, set to the music of Outkast and Michael Jackson. Rooster is a speakeasy owner caught between feuding gangs of moonshine manufacturers, and Zora is his frustrated wife, left waiting at home. The Cotton Mouth Club is the ensemble's biggest and most ambitious production of the 2013 season, and the historic Biograph Theater provides the perfect setting for the period show that Crash calls "a surreal fantasy." Great theater! Great show! After the show was over and the puppeteers came out, I was surprised that there were only two.

This was the best entertainment event I've ever taken my 3-year-old to. She loved every minute of it. Thanks to the event's "no shushing" policy, children all around the theater were greeting their old friends -- the hungry caterpillar, brown bear, the red bird -- and squealing with delight over their antics. The puppeteers were masterful in their handling of these creatures -- the caterpillar was particularly expressive in his efforts to eat his way through the week. At 55 minutes, it's just the right length for younger kids. The puppeteers answered questions at the end, bringing out puppets on request and explaining how certain actions (like the disappearing moon) worked.
We attended because I found an offer for discounted tickets (I thought the regularly priced tickets were a little expensive) -- however my child was so delighted by the show, I'm seriously considering taking her to another performance at the regular ticket rate. It's totally worth it to hear the wonder and delight in her voice as she watched the caterpillar transform into a butterfly. Oh, and another bonus? There weren't any tables full of merchandise outside the theater.
