In the heat and repression of rural Spain before the Spanish Civil War, five sisters are stunned by the death of their father. Forced into eight years of mourning by their mother Bernarda, in the stifling heat, desires, dark secrets and jealousy escalate. Meanwhile, their love-starved 80 year-old grandmother, Maria Josefa, is in love with the mysterious and forbidden Pepe el Romano. In an attempt to find happiness with her lover, she entices her youngest granddaughter, Adela, to plot their escape from Bernarda's tyranny.

Wicker Park's beautiful white terra-cotta Chopin Theatre was built in 1918, and served as an anchor of Chicago's Polish community for years. Now owned by Zygmunt Dyrkacz, the off-Loop venue hosts a whopping 500 presentations per year on the main stage which seats up to 226 and the intimate black box studio which has room for 100.

<p>A fiercely provocative twist on a Lorca classic that takes you to a part of the house where no one dares go. After the death of their father, five sisters are forced into eight years of mourning by their mother Bernarda. In the stifling heat, desires, dark secrets and jealousy escalate while their sex starved 80 year-old grandmother is in love with the mysterious and forbidden man. In an attempt to find happiness with her lover she entices her youngest granddaughter to plot their escape from Bernarda’s tyranny. Featuring Teatro Vista ensemble members Charin Alvarez, Laura Crotte, Sandra Marquez and Juan Villa with Julia Neary, Rachel Cerda, Tanya Saracho, Lily Mojekwu, and Ilana Faust. For this production Teatro Vista has extended a special invitation to visual artist Luis DeLaTorre to create a spectrum of dramatic visuals. </p>
