Chicago Shakespeare Theatre presents the finale of its 25th anniversary season, Shakespeare's rarely produced Timon of Athens. Directed by CST Artistic Director, Barbara Gaines, this production is set in the world of high-risk futures trading, where Timon is king of the hill, until a reversal of fortune sends him into financial free fall and his formers friends become ruthless creditors. Timon is played by internationally-acclaimed actor Ian McDiarmid, who won the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play for his performance as Teddy in Brian Friel's Faith Healer. He is perhaps most famous for his chilling performance as the Emperor in George Lucas's 1983 film Return of the Jedi, and later as Senator Palpatine in the Star Wars prequels. Learn More

My wife and I, who attend numerous theaters in Chicago, thought the production was excellent. I thought the simple staging was a good representation of what a real Shakespeare production would have been.

Our problem was hearing. Goldstar put us in EXCELLENT seats, but both of us missed a number of the "punch lines." Neither has perfect hearing, but at times I had the impression that a substantial part of the audience missed the point. I know timing is a critical part of humor, so actors cannot pause before the line. However, at times an actor seemed to lower the volume on a line, causing us to miss the joke.

This was an excellent performance of As You Like It. The actor playing Rosalind did a wonderful job. The wrestling fight scene was memorable. The actor playing Phoebe was stunning. I look forward to another Shakespeare performance.

Description

An idyllic Forest of Arden provides the lush backdrop for Shakespeare's glorious romantic comedy of courtiers, clowns, philosophers and provincials — all bewitched by the trials and triumphs of love. Disguised as a boy, Rosalind escapes the perilous court — only to find her heart in peril as she instructs the man she loves on how best to woo a woman. CST's acclaimed Associate Artistic Director Gary Griffin stages this tale of mistaken identity and misguided affection, following his wildly successful CST productions of Private Lives and Amadeus.

Griffin has cast As You Like It with a talented Chicago company of actors that includes many frequent CST collaborators. Performing the role of Rosalind is Kate Fry, who last appeared in CST’s Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, marking the Theater’s debut at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Joining Fry as Rosalind’s cousin Celia is Chaon Cross, who collaborated with Griffin on CST’s Private Lives last season. Matt Schwader, performing the role of Orlando, appeared in CST’s “Short Shakespeare!” production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Henry IV Parts 1 and 2. Helen Hayes Award winner Ross Lehman returns to perform the role of Jaques, having most recently appeared in Chicago Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Kevin Gudahl, who received critical acclaim for his turn in Griffin’s Pacific Overtures, will appear as Duke Senior.

Performing the role of Touchstone is Phillip James Brannon, who last appeared in CST’s Richard III. Additional CST veterans in Griffin’s production include Patrick Clear as Corin, Matt DeCaro as Duke Frederick, Dennis Kelly as Adam, Elizabeth Ledo as Phoebe and Jeff Parker as Oliver. Steve Haggard, currently appearing as Benvolio in CST’s Romeo and Juliet, returns as Silvius. The cast for As You Like It is rounded out by Hillary Clemens as Audrey, Nathan Hosner as Charles/William, Andrew Mueller as Amiens, Andrew Neiman as Le Beau, Mark Richard as First Lord, Austin Talley as Second Lord, Steve Wojtas as Jaques de Boys and ensemble members Josh Doucette and David Schlumpf.
