Enjoy a full evening of works by celebrated contemporary choreographer Jirí Kylián in Hubbard Street Dance Chicago's Spring Series at the Harris Theater. You'll be treated to company premieres of Falling Angels and Sarabande along with audience favorites Petite Mort and 27'52". One of six "black and white" works by Kylián, Sarabande features an all-male ensemble and is set to Bach's second partita for solo violin with electronically manipulated sound, made live by the dancers' bodies and voices. The work's counterpart is the driving, hypnotic Falling Angels, set to part one of Steve Reich's phased-percussion composition, Drumming. One of Kylián's most popular works, Petite Mort was created for the 1991 Salzburg Festival commemorating the second centenary of Mozart's death. And the quotidian becomes epic in the masterwork 27'52". Composer Dirk Haubrich's original score borrows two themes by Gustav Mahler as well as text by Baudelaire and Bruce Lee, among others, and demonstrates how Kylián's style shifted at the start of the new millennium. Some of Balanchine's best works. Ballet Chicago did a great job and was able to touch even those that had never been exposed to ballet before. Some of the dancers really stood out for their technique and passion, but their performance was not consistently flawless throughout the show.
