Eclipse Theatre Company presents Romulus Linney's historical drama Democracy. In the potitical society of 1870s Washington, two beautiful women must decide whether to marry two men. This scathingly funny, insightful play, based on two novels by Henry Adams, is set against the backdrop of Ulysses S. Grant's scandal-plagued administration. Learn More

My friend and I both thought this play was not very engaging. We were distracted by the accents that were different from each other and not consistent with many actors. I didn't like the switch from the actresses describing the sisters to becoming the sisters. I also found it confusing to have one actor play multiple roles which did not appear to be very different from each other (and frankly a bit disturbing -- for example, the man who plays the Brontes' father also plays Healthcliff (I think) who interacts romantically with Charlotte when she's fantasizing about being Jane Eyre).

Bronte is a charming and unique protrayal of the three sisters' lives and the source of their writings. Interwoven are bits of their books and personalilties from them. The entire cast is impressive in revealing the different personalities. The humor is witty and the drama well done.

The acting was wonderful, the accents were refereshingly accurate, the staging was well done. As a devoted Bronte fan, I went half expecting caricatures or idealized versions of these women, and the men in their lives. I found it historically correct and very interesting. I especially enjoyed the Bertha/Cathy character. The entire production brought the Brontes to life. I'm so very glad I went!
This inventive drama by Polly Teale, originally developed by the U.K.’s acclaimed Shared Experience Theatre Company, examines the lives of three of the most studied and discussed writers of all time. Spurred by their brother’s tumultuous personal life, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte write from their remote home on the Yorkshire moors. The real and the imagined collide as the characters the sisters have created come to life. Bronte explores the question of how a trio of Victorian spinsters could have produced some of the most passionate literature ever written.
