Written by multi-Emmy Award-winning playwright Mark Saltzman, Clutter makes its Midwest premiere at the Greenhouse Theater Center. Based on the compelling true story of the wealthy, reclusive Collyer brothers, who became hoarders in their Fifth Avenue mansion in 1920s Harlem, Clutter is the darkly fascinating story of what happens when one brother goes missing and the other is found dead in his room. All of New York is shocked at what the police find inside the home of these wealthy brothers: junk, trash, clutter -- crammed everywhere, piled up to the ceilings. What turned these old-money aristocrats into compulsively hoarding shut-ins? Who killed Homer Collyer? Where's Langley? And what does their relentless obsession reveal about their lives -- and souls? At turns poignant and witty, Clutter is a lighthearted yet touching true-life mystery. Learn More

My friend and I both thought this play was not very engaging. We were distracted by the accents that were different from each other and not consistent with many actors. I didn't like the switch from the actresses describing the sisters to becoming the sisters. I also found it confusing to have one actor play multiple roles which did not appear to be very different from each other (and frankly a bit disturbing -- for example, the man who plays the Brontes' father also plays Healthcliff (I think) who interacts romantically with Charlotte when she's fantasizing about being Jane Eyre).Written on May 05 2008

Bronte is a charming and unique protrayal of the three sisters' lives and the source of their writings. Interwoven are bits of their books and personalilties from them. The entire cast is impressive in revealing the different personalities. The humor is witty and the drama well done.Written on May 05 2008

The acting was wonderful, the accents were refereshingly accurate, the staging was well done. As a devoted Bronte fan, I went half expecting caricatures or idealized versions of these women, and the men in their lives. I found it historically correct and very interesting. I especially enjoyed the Bertha/Cathy character. The entire production brought the Brontes to life. I'm so very glad I went!Written on May 05 2008

Description
This inventive drama by Polly Teale, originally developed by the U.K.’s acclaimed Shared Experience Theatre Company, examines the lives of three of the most studied and discussed writers of all time. Spurred by their brother’s tumultuous personal life, Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte write from their remote home on the Yorkshire moors. The real and the imagined collide as the characters the sisters have created come to life. Bronte explores the question of how a trio of Victorian spinsters could have produced some of the most passionate literature ever written.
