Winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, Intimate Apparel tells the story of Esther, a middle-aged, African-American seamstress in turn-of-the-20th-century New York who has learned to make ends meet by teaching herself to sew lingerie. After decades of loneliness, Esther finds solace in letters from George, a handsome, young Caribbean man working on the Panama Canal. Enlivened by this potential romance, but burdened by illiteracy, Esther relies on two of her patrons -- a rich white socialite and a prostitute -- to help her compose her letters to George. Intimate Apparel was written by Lynn Nottage, winner of the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Ruined. Learn More
