Wishbone Theatre Collective's Devil May Care combines the unlikely topics of gasoline, a gun and religion, with the result being a dark, and twisted drama. Northwestern alum and playwright Kendall Sherwood penned the new work, starring John Mark Sawyer and Denise Smolarek, which finds two residents of a small town with disparate faith experiences each challenging the other's motives for being in an empty church at midnight. Lost in their lives and beliefs, this chance encounter will redefine them both.

Overall, it was ok. The first half was good, the second half, kind of dragged. The ending was good. I would had enjoyed it more if it hadn't felt like the ending was prolonged. They could had shorten the story and cut the intermission out.

Wishbone theatre collective’s production of “Devil May Care” concerns two previously unacquainted residents of the rural South. Both are unhappy, and planning to take action to relieve their pain when they encounter each other in an ostensibly empty church. The plot plays out through a series of monologues in which one character presents a part of the increasingly agonizing backstory. The other character then responds in a generally soothing manner, and the ensuing dialog leads to a monolog by the other character. The first act ends on a highly dramatic note, with the (stronger) second act providing an increasingly emotional more of the same in the same pattern. The author has sought to provide a shock-ending to the play (a la “Shining City”), but the recurrent cycles of tension being built-up and then relaxed undermine the desired end to a considerable degree. The director has made good use of the entire theater, with the audience seated in pews. Despite the shortcomings of a somewhat repetitious script (it could easily be cut from 2.5 to 2 hours run time), the director has fashioned an absorbing theatrical experience with the aid of an exceptionally credible performance by Denise Smolarek. She simply inhabits Abbie.
