A white woman and an escaped slave form an unlikely but extraordinary friendship on the eve of civil war in the stirring musical drama, Dessa Rose. Written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, the award-winning duo behind the musical Ragtime and the new Broadway musical Rocky, the musical weaves fact and fiction as it reveals each woman's struggle for a different kind of freedom. Ruth Sutton is a white woman abandoned by her husband and living alone on an isolated farm. Dessa Rose is an escaped slave on the run from a bloody slave rebellion, with a newborn infant to protect. Desperate and with nowhere left to turn, Dessa Rose seeks refuge with Ruth. Hidden in the Alabama backwater, the two women form an uneasy alliance that ultimately transcends racial barriers. Together they find the strength to confront the world on their own terms in a journey that is sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, but always uplifting and inspiring. Learn More
