One of literature's oldest figures -- the returning solider -- gets a contemporary twist in Ithaka. In this Midwest premiere of the recently commissioned play from Andrea Stolowitz, the soldier in question is both a Marine officer and a woman, Captain Elaine Edwards. Fresh off her latest Afghanistan tour, Edwards has trouble adjusting to life back at home. After a blowup with her husband, she skips town and undertakes an Odyssean journey, battling her monsters and struggling to find a path to her true "home" once more. The Portland-based Stolowitz, winner of the 2013 Oregon Book Award for Antarktikos and the Fowler/Levin Prize for this play, grounds her latest work in interviews with veterans and their families, enhancing the play's realism and its dramatic impact. The play was engaging and funny at times. It presented numerous scenarios in which people misrepresented themselves and the resulting repercussions. The central skits included flashbacks of Milli Vanilli and their scandal and the ongoing relationship of a gay couple. The acting was good and the dancing was energetic. I recommend the play.

Pavement Group never fails to offer up a thought-provoking night of theatre. The acting was exceptional across the board. Even the minor characters were completely fleshed out. If you missed this show, make sure you catch their next one.
