A fortysomething playwright who can't get his work produced conjures up an alter ego: an African American lesbian woman in a wheelchair who instantly becomes famous. But if people find out the truth about "her" identity, things are really going to get ugly. Inspired by the infamous Milli Vanilli lip-synching scandal (and borrowing the title of one of Milli Vanilli's hits), playwright Bixby Elliot has crafted a humorous and bold indictment of the institution of theater and the craft of creation.

By the Way, Meet Vera Stark: Sly Satire Skewers Hollywood Racism

Full Price:
$43.00 - $55.00
Our Price:
$21.50 - $27.50

Set in Hollywood over a 70-year period, Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's pseudo-biographical comedy By the Way, Meet Vera Stark follows the life of a headstrong African-American actress who begins a career in the 1930s, at a time when her only shot at success lay in stealing small scenes in big Hollywood blockbusters. Seventy years later, film buffs reflect on the life and legacy of the controversial star, whose eventual fame and fortune came at the price of perpetuating dangerous stereotypes. Nottage artfully blends comedy and social commentary for a thoroughly entertaining yet thought-provoking picture of the cultural climate that shaped Vera Stark. Clever and illuminating, this show draws on screwball films of the 1930s and uses today's fascination with celebrity and controversy to get to the truth behind the legend, and reflect on who she might have been if she'd lived in a different time. Pavement Group never fails to offer up a thought-provoking night of theatre. The acting was exceptional across the board. Even the minor characters were completely fleshed out. If you missed this show, make sure you catch their next one.

The play was engaging and funny at times. It presented numerous scenarios in which people misrepresented themselves and the resulting repercussions. The central skits included flashbacks of Milli Vanilli and their scandal and the ongoing relationship of a gay couple. The acting was good and the dancing was energetic. I recommend the play.
