Debra Ehrhardt's acclaimed solo show Jamaica, Farewell is based on a mostly true story about the playwright's journey to the USA from Jamaica in the turbulent 1970s of the Manley Era. As an 18-year-old secretary in Kingston, Jamaica, Ehrhardt and her passion for America bump into a handsome CIA agent over a bowl of oxtail soup. She decides to squeeze through the pinhole of opportunity with the help of this love-struck American. Her way out of Jamaica is blocked by many obstacles: an alcoholic father, a Bible-spouting mother, the price of an air ticket and U.S. government suspicions. The boundary between bravery and foolishness becomes blurred as she becomes more desperate. When she agrees to smuggle a million dollars in cash to a mysterious contact somewhere in Miami, the agent becomes her unwitting accomplice. NAACP Award-winner Ehrhardt plays every part. Jamaica, Farewell is directed by Joel Zwick (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and has been optioned for film by a major Hollywood producer. Learn More

I really wanted to like this play. I'm a fan of both the House Theatre and musicals, so I thought putting the two together would be a recipe for success. I couldn't have been more disappointed. The set is well-done, except for the fact that I couldn't see any of the scenes in one particular area without leaning entirely out of my seat and craning my neck (and I was in the front row). The dialog was cheesy without being campy, and it could have used a good, strong dose of camp. Without revealing too much, I found the metaphors for self-expression and emotional pain to be trite, and disrespectful to the motivations and feelings of real teens. That being said, the 17 year-old who accompanied me thoroughly enjoyed it, so what do I know!Written on Apr 23 2010

It was ok. The play was dramatic. The crowd was rowdy. I think it was a bit out of touch, but overall ok.Written on Jun 05 2010

We love Nathan Allan's work. It's creative and insightful - deeply passionate. There were several literal and metaphorical scenes that really made me think, if I allowed them to. Go and enjoy the show, and prepare to get aroused!Written on May 17 2010

So not was I was expecting but in a good way. Loved the casting, singing, choreography and dialog. Only gripe was that the ensemble was difficult to hear when they had singing parts. It had a very Baz Luhrman feel to me. Dramatic, stylized and crazy good music. See this if you have the chance!Written on May 17 2010
