Visiting company Interrobang Theatre Project presents Hot 'N' Throbbing. Written three years before she won the Pulitzer Prize for How I Learned to Drive, Paula Vogel's drama is a bold, unflinching examination of domestic violence, sexual politics and parenting. The story follows Charlene, a suburban single mother who writes pornographic feminist screenplays to support her hormonally charged teenagers. When her alcoholic ex-husband Clyde returns, the family's day takes a dark turn that will change them all forever. Vogel's play is a savagely funny and potent exploration of adult themes that will challenge you with tough questions about society's continued role in raising victims, bullies and abusers.

I have mixed feelings. The actors were well prepared and I have to give them kudos for that however I was not as captured as I thought I would be given the nature of the topics. It was interesting however and has led to a few good conversations and a good deal of self reflection on the nuances of the subject matter so that alone was worth the price of the ticket.

Was late due to traffic and not allowed to enter the theater. Perhaps there are legitimate reasons for this. However, the attitude of the Interrobang rep was unnecessarily curt. He seemed annoyed that I had the audacity to ask. I wasted seventeen bucks plus several hours of my time driving there and back. Not sure I'd make the effort for Interrobang again.

Again, no issue with acting, Raven is disciplined & competent there. But speaking to play & script, can't say I was pulled in or much interested. The plot was highly disjointed & fragmented! Although not hard to follow, didn't appreciate the "double take" presentation of conversations NOR did the threads tie at all together. Please PICK domestic violence, pornography/erotica, children's innocence lost, raising ones children....or ONE theme to explore. YES, they CAN be tied together I suppose (that makes marvelous theater!)--- they were not here. Didn't flow & couldn't figure out the POINT of this to save my life (and yes, I see lots of esoteric, gritty or arty theater!!) Better next time Raven, they can't all be hits.
