The classic computer game The Oregon Trail gets a delightfully faithful stage adaptation -- bandits, dysentery and all. Known for their witty wizardly mash-up A Very Potter Musical, StarKid Productions' latest musical comedy The Trail To Oregon! follows a dysfunctional pioneer family as they fight their way cross-country by covered wagon, hunting, fording rivers and battling snakes, measles, typhoid and other dangers every step of the way. While those who grew up playing the The Oregon Trail game will delight in seeing its unintentionally hilarious grim scenarios unfold onstage, everyone at this show will revel in StarKid's side-splitting show tunes and razor-sharp dialogue. This was the final preview--and one of the main actors was missing because there had been a death in the family. The director stepped in with script in hand. And he was fabulous in the role! I have seen shows by the company before, but this was the best. The choreography was fantastic, not just for a non-Equity company but on an absolute basis. The music was wonderful. The story, though it's been around for over 50 years, was not one I'm familiar with. I heard someone talking after the show: He'd seen the show on Broadway and thought the show much better in this small space.
There may, however, be a change in store. When Frank Loesser and his friends wrote the show in 1960, smoking of real cigarettes was common onstage. The actors in this show used e-cigarettes and c-cigars. Today the smoking of e-cigarettes indoors in public places is illegal. Will it affect the show? Hmmm.
