More than 150 years before Ozzy Osborne and Alice Cooper, Romantic composer Hector Berlioz was writing music about witches, guillotines and bizarre drug-induced hallucinations. Now the Chicago Symphony Orchestra plays his masterpiece, Symphonie fantastique, a phantasmagorical adventure that still shocks and amazes. Written to impress an Irish actress who would later become his wife, Berlioz held back nothing in this intense display of genius. After the concert, join the Beyond the Score creative team for a Q&A about this sensational work that inspired the score to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. Learn More
Music from three continents will be featured when the Chicago Sinfonietta presents the Chicago debut of guest conductor Alondra de la Parra and cellist Tony Rymer in a celebration of Latin influences in classical music. Raised in Mexico City, the not yet 30-year old de la Parra is the founder and artistic director of New York’s Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas. Rymer is the 2009 First Place winner of the prestigious Sphinx Competition.
De la Parra leads the Sinfonietta through pieces from North and South America as well as Beethoven’s lively and rhythmic 7th Symphony.
