Eclipse Theatre Company's Eugene O'Neill season concludes with what is widely considered to the playwright's masterpiece. This four-act drama concerns the Tyrone family's affairs on a fog-bound August day. James Tyrone, a vain, faded matinee idol, presides over a household in ruin -- his wife Mary, whose morphine addiction provides escape; son Edmund, tethered to home yet dreaming of life on the open sea; and son Jamie, whose studied cynicism protects him from a lifetime of failure. The family copes with physical and spiritual ruin, even as their lives are bound together by an unbreakable bond of love. O'Neill was posthumously awarded both the Tony Award for Best Play as well as a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1957.

Sondheim Classic A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

One of the funniest musicals ever written, Stephen Sondheim's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum comes to the Renton Civic Theatre. Sondheim, along with writers Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, combines plot elements from the comedies of ancient Roman playwright Plautus with the high-spirited antics of Vaudeville for a wild and witty farce set in the ancient city. In exchange for his freedom, a crafty slave sets out to woo a beautiful (but not too bright) courtesan for his young master. Bawdy puns, mistaken identities, and sly social commentary (not to mention Sondheim's classic songs) garnered this Broadway hit multiple Tony awards and a subsequent film adaptation starring Zero Mostel. Enjoyed the intimacy of the small studio theater. Incredible performance by Susan Monts-Bologna as Mary.

The excellent cast did O'Neill's play justice, especially the woman who played Mary Tyrone. It didn't even feel like it was almost 4 hours long. I haven't been to the Athenaeum in years, but now I'm asking myself why. The show I saw six years ago was also excellent. I'm going back soon.
