Ok, well I review them all of the time because I absolutely LOVE their facials. However, this was the first time that I had received a massage...I must say, I was not impressed. Maybe it was because I am used to a different type but I will not be going back for a massage but definitely a facial.
Again, facial is amazing!!! I love it. No pressure to buy but they are very helpful if you are interested. There is a little noise but I honestly try to go during the day during the week...ahhhh complete relaxation and your skin looks and feels amazing after. I love it. NOt to mention it is a fraction of the prices of the BIG name places in the city that just look at you as dollar signs...

This wasn't one of the worst experiences ever - which is why it got 1 instead of 0 stars - but it was still pretty bad.
It's a no frills spa, i.e. no lounge area, shower, or changing area - which is totally fine by me - and the space is nice. Like everyone else mentioned, though, if you're not going to have enclosed rooms, the staff there MUST be constantly cognizant of the noise level. It wasn't noisy, per se, but every word and sound cool be heard in the treatment 'rooms.'
I came here because of special via Goldstar, $40 for an hour massage and $40 for an hour facial. The massage was average, the facial was poor. Agnes, the massage therapist was pleasant and friendly; the massage was fine. The reason it was only average was because she didn't apply much pressure, it just felt like someone was applying lotion most of the time.
The facial was done by Maggie, and I was pretty annoyed when I finally left the spa. You fill out a brochure, like normal, with your skin routine and information. I listed that my skin is oily. HOWEVER, she proceeded to douse my face with oil and massage it for about 10 minutes. (The massage would've been nice, but the whole time I was thinking about all the oil oozing INTO my pores and it was grossing me out.) Then, to make matters worse, when she turns the steam on my face she says she'll leave me for 10 minutes. (My experience it has been about 5 min, but whatever.) She proceeds to leave me there for 20 minutes while she goes to get a snack... no, seriously, I heard her get a bowl and spoon! I was totally sweating by the time she came back. Then, because she wasted all that time with the steam, she rushed the rest to get done in time for her next client. I also heard another employee walk in with a bag of chips and sounded like she was crunching the bag loudly for about 5 min before Maggie had to go tell her to be quiet... like they never heard these complaints before?
When I used the restroom before leaving, my face looked like an oil slick.
If I break out because of this crappy facial, I'm going to be pissed! I will most likely NOT return to this spa, and would advise against your decision to as well... there are too many other terrific options. If you're budget conscious, check out SpaForever. If you have cash to spend, check out Spacio.

As usual, this place does such an amazing job. The only down fall is that the walls in the rooms dont go all the way up to the ceilings so you can hear your surroundings BUT this place is totally worth going to. It is by far one of the best places that I have ever received a facial at. Plus, if you let your mind relax, you dont need walls, just go in your relaxation!

I enjoyed my European Facial. I was expecting it to be loud and distracting based on other comments, but I felt very relaxed the whole time. Maybe because it was not very busy day and I was the only one at the spa. The full hour facial was good and it included a shoulder massage. They also gave me samples of the face products used so I'm using them this week. If my sensitive skin agrees with the products used, I'd go back to buy them. I would go back for another facial and maybe try their massage.

The atmosphere is really soothing and relaxing, the staff is professional and caring, I had a really good massage, the french masseuse Agnes was amazing, she gave me the massage that I was hoping for.
The european facial is something that I was missing around here, Meggie really took her time of squeezing my black heads and gave me a clear and glowing skin. I felt like being in a spa in Italy again.
Im really happy about my experience at Amber Salon and I will suggested to anyone who wants a good treatment.
The only disappointment was the fact that the rooms are not isolated acustically and that was a little distractive.

My massage was WONDERFUL, the technician "Ana" was really terrific very intuitive. I've had many massages - it's sort of my guilty pleasure and this one definitely ranks as one of the best!

My Facial was really mediocre. "Eva" was the technician - she used paper towels to 'rinse' off the cleanser and mask and it never felt like she really got the product off adequately. Her English was very scant - and I had to laugh when she told me that after doing my extractions my face was "red and ugly". I knew she didn't mean it as an insult just a language barrier(?) but she slathered my face with a tinted spf moisturizer at the end to cover the "red ugly" face. I wish she had asked me if I wanted that because I much prefer to walk out of a facial with my face feeling clean and fresh. NOT sticky and slimy with uneven tinting 'makeup'. I immediately went home and washed my face! I also had to ask her for undereye moisturizer which she had to dig around for - even leaving the room to try and find some. Isn't that a common part of a facial? My only other complaint would be the lack of space in the treatment rooms to hang your clothes and the open floor plan which allows for noise and conversation to be heard during your treatment.

I had a Herbal wrap, I'm a first timer and was a little uneasy about what this experience would be. It was awesome and the ladies made me feel very comfortable. It can be a little noisy if people are coming in and out -because the rooms are open on top.
Maybe they should give you headphones to wear to fight the outside noises, but other than that - it was great.

while the atmosphere is very soothing, the "rooms" where the treatments occur are not sound proof (think of being in a dressing room and able to hear everything that's going on around you, i.e. people walking in and out of the front door, the toilet flushing, the water cooler) which made it very distracting and i wasn't able to completely relax and enjoy my massage.

I have mixed feelings about my visit. I liked the décor. The light was soft. The music was soothing. But the air conditioning was so loud, most of the time I was not able to hear the music. They should wire speakers into the rooms. The facial was excellent. I would go back just for that. The massage was good. Not great. She did a great neck and back massage but was lacking in the feet and hands area. I like my scalp and jaw massaged. She did neither. I did not get the full time. I could feel her going too fast. My massage was only 40 minutes long. The massage was worth the price but not worth a return visit. I may go back for another facial.

Cute, relaxing spa. The technicians were very nice and accommodating and I enjoyed my massage and facial. I can see what the other comment was saying in that these were not "rooms," because they had curtain doors and the walls did not go up to the ceiling. Despite being able to hear life noises, the spa was still quiet and tranquil and the setup did not bother me at all. Just a head's up that they burn incense - I know some people do not like that smell, like my mother! I would definitely go back - the spa experience was pleasant AND what a great deal with Goldstar!
For those who have not had facials, it is commonplace for the technician to leave the room for 10-15 minutes while your mask is drying or during steaming, etc. Your facial is booked for how long you're getting your skin worked on with products, not for how long the technician is in the room. Now if they leave for 45 minutes to take other clients during your mask (like what happened to my sister at a spa in England), then you might want to speak up! My facial at Amber spa was the norm and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I went to Amber for a facial and a massage, both lasting one hour, it was extremely relaxing and revitalizing. The facial was very thorough and the massage was so relaxing. The masseuse massaged all of the right spots. I felt like a new woman when I left. I will definitely be back for another two hour body touch up.

I registered for a facial at Amber Spa through Goldstar Events and was a bit skeptical because of the discounted price. In my mind, I didn't think the experience would be enjoyable because of the low cost. I couldn't be more wrong. The ambiance was calm and relaxing and the facial itself was wonderful! I definitely intend to visit again!

I was very surprised by Amber Spa. When I entered, I was greeted by the nice receptionist and offered a selection of hot teas. Considering I had a slightly upset stomach, it was very soothing. I arrived a bit early and it was nice to unwind and look around the spa. It's a small space, but it was decorated for the senses.
My facial was performed by Margaret and she was wonderful! I felt as if she did a thorough job. She made sure that she asked about skin sensitivities. I think this may be one of the first facials where I didn't have a reaction to the products used! The extractions didn't even hurt that much. She has a very soothing touch. I also decided to have my brows waxed and she did a very good job. She took her time and at no time did I feel that the service was ever rushed.
I do agree with the other reviewer that stated that the noise level in the spa could be distracting. I scheduled my facial on a Saturday morning and I think that I may have been the only client. It was nice, but towards the end of my facial there were some visitors to the spa and I could hear their conversations. I think that maybe the spa should use headphones with soothing music or ear plugs to dampen sounds? I didn't have a problem, but I could see where it -could- be a problem.
I would definitely go back and recommend friends to go there. Oh yeah, they use top grade products by well known companies. That is always a plus. I hate going to get a facial where they use "special" house blends that cost a fortune.
Overall, it was a very good experience.

This was my second time going to Amber Spa for a massage using Goldstar. Like the first time, I had a wonderful experience. I had a different massage therapist each time, and they were both very good. I didn't have a problem with the noise, like others have complained about here, because the music and the heating/a.c system drowned out the little noisee there was to begin with. I would not hesitate to go back, and plan to go back again.

I was disappointed with the experience. First the facialist wore plastic surgical gloves through the entire facial. I understand why she might do that, however, it was an hour worth of rubbing plastic on my skin. And while the space is quite attractive, the cubby that my facial was given was quite small -- with a loud clock ticking the hour off.

The massage and facial were great, but the rooms were small and cramped, and open; so you heard all the noise of people entering, talking, etc. There also wasn't any where to sit and relax afterward unless you wanted to sit out in the waiting room.

This was a great massage, especially for the price. The place is a bit smallish and there isn't a separate area like a locker room in which to get undressed - just the massage room. But the actual massage was really good.

Absolutely wonderful. Quiet. Serene. Great convenient location. Friendly staff. My skin literally glowed after the facial and has significantly improved in the last few days. LOVE this place! No worries about the "mini-walls" - you're so relaxed it really doesn't matter and the ladies have taken to whispering so as not to disturb.

I bougt the package as a gift for a spa junkie & was told that the massage was wonderful. She also stated that the facial was really good & at the combo price she would definately return. When she went she was the only customer & stated that there were no problems w/noise, etc. Parking was ample and easy & the staff friendly and experienced.

This tiny storefront is set on a quiet residential street. Immediatly upon walking in the door I felt relaxed by the faint incense smell and the calming earth tones and ethnic decor. My only complaint about Amber Spa is the lack of privacy - each massage room has curtains for a door and as the space has a loft-style, the walls do not connect to the ceiling so you hear everything in the reception area that is only 10 feet away. However, they only take one or two appointments per hour so for the most part there was no foot traffic. Otherwise, the massage was beyond excellent and the staff curteous and helpful.

When you first walk in, the ambiance of the Amber Spa envelopes you to want to stay a VERY long while. The staff is extremely kind, friendly, and professional...attending your every need. I was surrounded by awesome colors and designs that lent themselves to total relaxation. What a wonderful first impression! Now this IS A SPA!
I was scheduled for a one hour massage followed by a one hour facial. The massage was deep and satisfying, releasing all my tension. I was totally relaxed-almost in a meditative state. The facial was also very relaxing as well as cleansing. My skin had never felt as soft or looked as clean & clear as it did when I left the Amber Spa.
I will scheduling another appointment....VERY soon!

I love this place. I was here before and they really do a great job. Yes there are not separate rooms but its still got some ambience to it. If you are going for a GOOD facial, go here. You wont be sorry. Other places have a little bit more ambience but definitely not as good as a facial in my eyes!

It was my first trip to Amber Spa - a lovely, cozy space just off Damen. The staff was courteous & attentive & the massage was great. My only concern was that there were not complete walls or ceilings to the massage space, so, had it been a busy day, that could have been distracting. Also, the lack of a ceiling made the light a little strong when I was finishing up my massage - dimmer light or some sort of shield would have been better. I would definitely go back!

I went to Amber Spa for a massage and a facial. The facial was great, but I have to say that they massage was one of the worst I have ever had. I asked the therapist to use more pressure and I was told she was still in the warm up phase. The pressure didn't change throughout the session. Then at the end, she told me she ran out of time so she was sorry she didn't get to massage my arms. I would never go back.

This might have been the worst massage I've ever had. The massage therapist (who is French, I think) was halfheartedly rubbing my back, and didn't even try to or begin to work the tension out of my shouders. I've been to Amber Spa several times before with a different Massage Therapist and liked it but this woman was terrible.

I recently had a facial at Amber Spa and it was fabulous. Other reviewers remarked about the noise issues due to the design of the walls open at the top. While I heard some noise when clients entered, 90% of the process was perfectly peaceful and my skin tone was greatly improved for the week after my treatment.
Here's what you can expect if you go to Amber Spa. Overall, the quality of service and product for the price are an exceptional value for Chicago. Street parking was easy for me to find within 1/2-block of the location. The spa is a small loft-like space and nicely appointed with amber hues and peaceful music/sounds. For a facial, the changing room is the treatment room - no locker/changing room. Everything is clean and comfortable. There was no hard sell for product either - greatly appreciated.
The facial experience is the result of a talented professional, wherever they may be. The full price for Amber's facials are about half of what high profile hotel spas downtown are charging with the same high quality outcome - your face looks and feels great. Even my husband noticed a difference.
I really enjoyed the experience and plan to go back again.

The check-in and service (I had a facial) were very professional and pleasant. It was a relaxing experience, with soothing music, lighting and scents. The space was clean. The only change I would have made: it would have been nice to know what each part of the treatment was. This was my first facial, though; other clients might appreciate the quiet.

it was nice and clean but the woman didn't seem to know what she was doing. She didn't get intot he muscles and I didn't feel massaged afterward. it felt like what a friend would do. I told her to be harder but she didn't change the pressure she was applying. I was disappointed.

It was a very nice facial, exactly what I expected. I loved the fact they didn't try to sell me additional services and products. Lasted the full hour. I see what other people mean about the noise. The walls of each service room don't go all the way up, so you can hear everything- but it wasn't that annoying. Great price for what you get.

Massage was very good. Location was easy to find, parking was available. Had a vague uneasiness about my personal security while getting the massage; each "room" was just curtains hanging down and I was probably no more than 20 feet from the unlocked front door. Would have felt better if the front door was locked and clients had to be buzzed in.

Spa was burning incense--I do not like that. It is a small place with very small massage "rooms" with red lighting and walls that don't reach to the top, so you can hear everything going on in the whole place!
My masseuse was small, with weak hands that rubbed hard in all the wrong places (on the side of my are which is BONE and not muscle) which was painful--and I'm a muscular girl--and didn't rub hard enough in other places. Overall, probably the worst massage I've ever had.

I thought that the massage was very good and the people were very accommodating. The past reviews had stated that the facility was very noisy, but I did not find it so. The music they played was my favorite George Winston CD. It was very relaxing. I would definitely go back, especially since it's right in my neighborhood.

This was my first time for a facial, but I have been to Amber Spa in the past for microdermabrasion and waxing. I have been pleased with the services they provide. The facial was fantastic; it was relaxing and my skin was glowing. The level of skill and care that goes into each experience keeps me coming back to Amber. Other notes - It is always relatively easy to find street parking, which I also appreciate!

A woman named Maggie gave me my hour long massage. I loved it! One of the best I have had in Chicago. She used a perfect (for me) medium pressure to dig in a little and work the muscles, but still keep the experience pleasant and relaxing. Aaaah. I'll go back there!

Lovely space, lovely people, and entirely professional. Massage was wonderful. I work in the service industry and it irritates me when I read reviewers saying they give a place 2 stars because it wasn't 'perfect' or 'I could hear noise'. People, please. Be grateful for what people do to make your life easier and no one is perfect. Amber Spa offering Goldstar is generous and socially conscious to say the least. It allows those of us who cannot afford treatments for our mental health, to "endulge". Thank you Amber Spa for a wonderful experience!

I am sorry to say the massage was not great, not enough pressure, however the facial was lovely. I would have liked the have the massage and mittens/booties for hands and feet during massage as well, but it was relaxing and very good. Overall, the experience was good and at the price a good value.

Facial was ok. Massage therapist was nice, but unfortunately just did NOT have good massaging skills.

Great massage! She focused on the exact muscles that were sore and really did a great deep-tissue massage. I will definitely be back!

The facial and massage were decent but nothing special. However the service was not particularly friendly or helpful in regards to skincare. At the prices they charge for services, I expect a little more than just okay.

I had a massage and facial at Amber Spa. The atmosphere was great. A small but relaxing enviroment. I was really pleased with both services. Both the masseuse and esthetician were very meticulous. Even though I have extremely sensitive skin I walk out with minimal redness.

The facial was fabulous but the massage was just ok. The atmopshere was relaxing but another client was very loud was disturbing. I would absolutely return for a facial.

I went for a facial during the day on a Friday so I didn't have the problems with noise as other people described. I was the only client in there and was so relaxed I almost fell asleep! The facial lasted over an hour and I thought she did I good job. I will definitely be back!

When I've been to Amber, it's been nothing but quiet! I love their peacful music and always feel fantastic when I leave. The facial leaves my skin glowing and dewy! The only drawback, if there is one, is I feel they need to spend more time on extractions. I will ask the next time I go, in 4 weeks or so, and I"m sure the tech (who has always been very sweet) will comply with my wishes. I hesitated writing this for fear that it would be more difficult for me to make an appt!

For the price it was fantastic! Massage and facial were great. Street noise and cell phones going off were my only big complaint. The staff was very nice and not pushy.

The salon is very welcoming and cozy. I got a facial and it was great, I felt that my skin was very clean and soft after it. I loved that Eva(cosmetologist) spent extra time with facial massage, that you don't get that often in most places. And needless to say, you can't beat goldtar.com price! I will go again, send my boyfriend :) and would recommend anyone!

I didn't really read the reviews before I went.... but I still would have tried it out. The "rooms" I was a little disappointed in... you could hear everything that was going on around you. On top of that, I couldn't really relax because I could hear the clock ticking the whole time. However, the massage was nice - I wish it had lasted a little longer. I would probably still give it another shot, because I did leave there feeling pretty good.. I just couldn't totally let myself go.

The spa has a nice atmosphere. Considering I had never had a facial before I was pleasantly surprised. I have sensitive skin and was concerned if the products would be ok. After the experience I didn't even put on make-up except mascara as my face had a natural glow that I hadn't seen without make-up. She even spends time clearing any white-head on your face. That hurt a little but the reward was great.
As far as the massage I thoughgt it was good. I usually get a hot stone massage so this was not as nice but well worth the $40 thru Goldstar. She did help my leg stop cramping as I am a runner so my IT band was a bit tight. All around this was a great way of treating myself at a reasonable cost.

This place tries very hard to be an upscale salon, however it was more like a nail salon turned lofted massage parlor. There was noise in the background, as I could hear other clients getting their massages. The massage was good but not catered to my specific needs. On top of that, I was covered head to toe in the popular smelly lotion they often use in cheap nail salons...

I actually preferred my student facial from Aveda, maybe because they massage your feet a little, back, shoulders, neck and face (like most facials). This was so-so and I wouldn't go back.
