Goodman Theatre performs a classic play with a twist when Shakespeare's intricate Measure for Measure is brought to life in Robert Falls' daring new production. This darkly humorous take on the timeless issues of hypocrisy and political power proves once again the enduring quality of Shakespeare's work. With his city falling into moral decay, Duke Vincentio hands over power to Lord Angelo, a morally upright deputy who sets out to enforce the law with ferocity. This experiment proves the inevitable truth that power corrupts, as Angelo succumbs to the temptation to abuse his newfound authority. When a young woman and her brother are put in danger by his lust and arrogance, the old Duke must step back in to set things right.

Sherman is one of the most prolific and acclaimed family-friendly song composers of all time. The Sherman Brothers songwriting duo, comprised of Richard M. Sherman and his late brother, Richard B. Sherman, was a veritable two-man Disney hit factory, crafting memorable melodies for numerous films including Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Winnie the Pooh, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and many more. Over the course of their nearly half-century songwriting career, the brothers were honored with two Academy Awards (for the music of Mary Poppins), three Grammy Awards and 24 gold and platinum albums. I can guarantee you that this "Measure . . ." will be like no other that you have seen. Some viewers will say that Falls has taken liberties with Shakespeare; but hey, my own opinion is that Shakespeare himself did whatever it took to get people into his theatre. As usual, the Goodman has gone overboard with the scenery; but that means you'll love this show if you like nifty movable stage sets. With a lot of scenery, a large ensemble of actors, and groovy 1970's disco music, it's easy to become distracted. I nearly missed at least two really important bits of action, and the lady next to me missed them entirely, which made her experience of the play completely different from mine. Try to stay focused on the crucial action or character of the moment (if you can determine what that is), because unexpected things happen, especially in the final moments of the play. It's a unique experience, and an unforgettable evening.

this is nothing but a ridiculous and pretentious exercise in reciting a "newly" defined Shakespeare in a macabre jungle of sex, corruption and dirt. Falls tries to shock through a raw treatment, juxtaposing promiscuity, music of the 70s, all the dirt-and-drugs of the 70s' “freedom,” and a poor re-write and “actualized” script that delivers un-“delightful” Hieronymus-Bosch-imagery. this equation of Shock+Shakespeare is too much of a viable combination for one stage.

alas, this is a[nother of Falls’] failed experiment if not, ultimately, an insult to the [paying] audience.

Overall enjoyed the performance. Some of the blocking seemed a bit awkward and some of the actors seemed to overact. Either some of the humor or urgency were missed by overacting. But all in all enjoyed the show.
