Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army, and his new wife, Desdemona, seemingly have it all -- true love, success and happiness. But can anyone protect them from "honest" Iago, a master magician of deceit? The inspiration for villains as varied as Milton's Satan and Breaking Bad's Walter White, Iago is one of the most hypnotically evil characters ever created, and the driving force behind Shakespeare's profound tragedy of love and jealousy. Laura Marks' taut drama revolves around the issue of having a child and post-partum issues. The play is written superbly in a spare and direct style. There is layer upon layer of subtle questions that go to the very heart of this most human experience. The play is tightly wound and fast-paced. The acting is wonderful ,particularely that of the main character, Mari, portrayed by Hillary Clemens. While the entire cast is quite able, Hillary Clemens performance is nuanced, controlled and invites the audiences response. Kudos to all involved with this production. Laura Marks is clearly a force to be reckoned with. Hillary Clemens again has lit up a Chicago stage. Get tickets while you can.
