Reluctantly reunited when their largely-absent father falls ill, a trio of estranged half-siblings come together to trade emotional blows in Melissa Ross' comedy-drama. This well-reviewed Gift Theatre production, a Chicago premiere, finds the eldest, Renee, forced to take the reins and deal out the recriminations to the immature brother, who works in a comic-book store, and the irresponsible youngest sister, as they try to put their dysfunctional past behind them and stumble towards a hopefully happier future. Laura Marks' taut drama revolves around the issue of having a child and post-partum issues. The play is written superbly in a spare and direct style. There is layer upon layer of subtle questions that go to the very heart of this most human experience. The play is tightly wound and fast-paced. The acting is wonderful ,particularely that of the main character, Mari, portrayed by Hillary Clemens. While the entire cast is quite able, Hillary Clemens performance is nuanced, controlled and invites the audiences response. Kudos to all involved with this production. Laura Marks is clearly a force to be reckoned with. Hillary Clemens again has lit up a Chicago stage. Get tickets while you can.
