A mostly very fine cast stuck in 3 plays about the staging of the
Christian passion play in 3 eras(Elizabethan England, early Nazi Germany
and 1970's/80's South Dakota),which is a high concept which could
have made for a fascinating theatrical experience. But the writing
and characters are mainly dull, predictable or annoying for most of
this.Ruhl doesn't yet have the imagination/maturity to integrate the
political into her play ways to be effective. With time and experience,we hope that will happen. 3.40 hours was way too long
for the results. A lot of fine work on and off that stage,as usual
at the Goodman.
Also--Why don't ANY of the characters in ACT 2 ,all except one who are German/Austrian (including HITLER!) speak with German acccents?
It makes this weakest of the 3 acts even more bogus.IRISH
and BRITISH dialect coaches seem to be the only ones who get any
work here.Theater Audiences can handle other accents.
Startlingly original, epic in scope yet beautifully human in its effect, Passion Play pits religious dogma, personal faith, and the realities of politics against love, beauty, and truth—all with Ruhl's signature wit, seductive theatricality, and devastating insight.
