German composer Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 3, Rhenish, is a celebration of the glorious Rhineland that inspired generations of German composers. Interestingly, the symphony is written in five movements rather than the more typical four. The "extra' fourth movement was inspired by a visit Schumann made to a cathedral in Cologne. Also on the program are Debussy's pastoral Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Saint-Saëns's picturesque Suite Algérienne. Ticketholders are invited to a special reception sponsored by Barefoot Wine & Bubbly following the concert.
