An innocent young writer struggling with his own homosexuality has his eyes opened to the dark and desperate side of society when he moves into a 1930s New Orleans rooming house and meets its collection of ailing and eccentric residents. A fascinating bookend to Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize-winning career, the famed playwright began writing this autobiographical play when he first moved to the French Quarter in 1938, but it wasn't completed and staged until 1977. This Raven Theatre revival highlights the poetic language and vivid characters that would echo throughout Williams' most famous works, including The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire. Cheerful and peppy but unfortunately forgettable, with a walk-through performance given by all. The pace is relentless, ill-suited to an unfolding Sherlock Holmes mystery and the genre of a live radio show. Opportunities for entertaining commercial "breaks" are squandered for (mostly unfunny) scripted promotions, read sotto voce for studio "authenticity". A Prairie Home Companion this is not. To make things a little worse, most of the live keyboard music is limited to one key -- often to one *chord* -- a maddening distraction. Despite the exuberance of the Raven cast I cannot recommend this show to others.
The cast of Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Goose includes Larry Carani, Stacie Doublin, Frederick Harris, Dean La Prairie, Sophia Menendian, JoAnn Montemurro, Ian Novak, Kelli Strickland, and Anthony Tournis.
