When Paul, a young victim of a knife attack, seeks assistance at a family's upper-class New York home, Ouisa Kittredge discovers how true the statement "everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people" really is. But Paul may not be all he says he is, and his aggressive, far-reaching search for meaningful human contact creates a web of confusion and pain that -- as Ouisa discovers -- didn't start, nor end, within her family's walls.

I thought the writing and acting were both great. The use of space was inclusive of the audience all of the time. I also enjoyed the elements of surptise.

Having recently seen several times the brilliant new David Hauptschein play "The Gurney", this was a depressing return to conventional theater. Every line is so precious, the topics are so obviously calculated to be "theatrical" in a manner intended to make a well educated, comfortable person feel he or she has been "challenged" while retaining a smug sense of superiority, and everything is so predictable, with the requisite "surprising twists," that one wonders why did the author bother. Was it the desire for success? Was it because the author thought these really were new "existential" issues? The conventional story evokes equally conventional, mechanical performances. What a difference from The Gurney. Thank God for Hauptschein. We should all cherish such a genius. Sadly, few even notice.

Description

Ouisa Kittredge read somewhere that "everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people." When Paul, a young victim of a knife attack, seeks assistance at her family's upper-class New York home, she discovers how true that statement really is. Claiming to be Sidney's Poitier's son, Paul connects to Ouisa and her husband Flan in a way not even their own children have. But Paul may not be all he says he is, and his aggressive, far-reaching search for meaningful human contact creates a web of confusion and pain that - as Ouisa discovers - didn't start, nor end, within her family's walls. A comic-tragedy loosely based on a true story, "Six Degrees of Separation," like a revolving Kandinsky, paints multiple sides on what drives and motivates us in the glare of money, greed, fame, lust and, finally, each other.
