The Ghost Is Here: U.S. Premiere of Work by Japanese Playwright Abe

Full Price:
$25.00
Our Price:
FREE - $12.50

Revered Japanese playwright and Nobel Prize nominee Kobo Abe's rarely-produced 1957 play examines the impact of war upon a culture and a nation. Set in the ruins of post-World War II Japan, at a moment in history when the Eastern nation was forced to redefine itself, the play uses original music, stylized song and dance, gallows humor and a multicultural cast to bring Abe's story to life. As Japan's people continue to reinvent themselves in the midst of monumental challenges, The Ghost Is Here also echoes throughout modern day America. Jaclynn Jutting directs the U.S. premiere for Vitalist Theatre. Learn More

DADA is a polarizing form of expression, and, as such, I completely disagree with the reviewer of the 20th of December, but also understand his/her point. Yeah, it seems random, and it is a little strange.

But, there's no show like this playing anywhere in Chicago right now, and there are probably no more than a handful in production across the whole US. It's truly unique, and makes a significant contribution to my warm and fuzzy feeling about the greatness of the Chicago theater scene.

The actors are passionate and clearly talented. The scripts (for what would even a DADA show be without scripts) are great, the props very well employed.

If I had a single criticism, I'd say the closing monologue was a touch too dramatic. But I won't go so far as to say it should be removed, because it's as good a closing as any and I absolutely love the lead actress/ringleader.

I would recommend this event to anybody, and I'll be in future audiences.

This event is inexplicable and not in a good way! We love crazy performance art as much as the next guy but this was just absurd. Expecting some sketchy holiday themed weirdness, we were stunned by this show. It couldn't find a balance between method screaming, mouth-farting out a song (the only good part of the show mind you), singing about pouring urine on a rag doll and zany antics. There was total confusion with the depressing finale where everyone disappears and never returns. Stay home..it's cold out. No seriously, see something else through Goldstar. The discounted tickets were the only thing stopping me from shooting myself.

I've attended 4 Soiree Dada events, and I highly recommend this troup with their current theatrical performance! I wouldn't miss Soiree Dada for the world, and am trying to get there one more time before their run ends. Oh yes!

Edge-y? Yes - all edges and little else. I suppose we just didn't get it, and from the reactions of the other audience members, we were not alone. A complete waste of time for us.

Description

Bringing DADA sentiment to the holidays, WNEP Theater deconstructs the holiday season only to use creative freedom and the human imagination to rebuild it. In this highly original presentation, the largest Soirée Dada cast ever will continue to confront the audience with irrationality, chance, and humor, offering (and occasionally forcing upon) their guests the opportunity to participate on an active level. There will be a tree and presents, too.
