The high-stakes world of middle-school spelling competitions takes center stage in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. This musical comedy follows six overachieving would-be wordsmiths and their neurotic parents. The hilariously catchy songs capture teenage troubles at their worst, from "Woe Is Me" to "My Unfortunate Erection (Chip's Lament)." And the contest teaches the valuable lesson that winning isn't the only definition of success. With music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was nominated for Best Musical and five other Tony Awards in its original run, winning for Best Book. "Better Not Bring Your Kids" . Period. I picked this show for Mother's Day because it looked very different/interesting for me and my Mom and my sons (age 13 & 9) love Samurai's (as any other boy). Aside from the Gratuitous use of profanity, the lesbian love scenes were more of the shocker and there's absolutely no mention of it in Anything. There should be a Parental Rating in place or I wish the Box Office might have warned us. The older adults behind us were even more offended and I don't think they came back after intermission. All that said, this is a phenomenal multimedia production. We all loved the special effects, the use of movies and the Spectacular DJ. The boys loved the fights scenes. The girls in this show are Boss! Great for a night out with adult friends. I wouldn't bring in anyone younger than 16 or older than 50.
