Based on the Newbery Award-winning children's novel by Lois Lowry, The Giver is a powerful story set in a seemingly utopian world. There is no poverty, no crime, no sickness and no unemployment. Individuality is discouraged and feelings such as pain, fear and love do not exist. When young Jonas turns 12, he is chosen for special training with The Giver to be the keeper of memories for his community. But during the training he discovers the contradictions of his supposedly perfect world and grows determined to regain power over his own destiny. The adaptation of the book was wonderful. I didn't know how they would portray some of the scenes with the Giver and the Receiver and the memories but they did a great job. We loved how all the actors sat down with everyone afterwards to discuss the themes and lessons from the play. Great job all around!Written on Apr 09 2012

First I would like to say that the venue was terrific, excellent theater, great seats, and that my 15 year old daughter thought the production was fantastic. From an adult perspective, I thought that most aspects of the play were done very well. The one thing that I couldn't buy, especially since I'm a teacher and deal with children who are 12, as were Jonas, Ascher and Fiona, was that they would be skipping around and generally acting as juvenile as they did. I didn't find it very realistic. Barring that, I enjoyed the production very much.Written on Apr 26 2012
