A magical mix of actors, puppets and musicians come together on stage in this new family musical, adapted from the popular children's book by Brian Selznick, who penned the book on which the hit film Hugo is based. The Houdini Box tells the story of 10-year-old Victor, who idolizes famed escape artist Harry Houdini, but whose Mom doesn't like having to rescue him from his own failed attempts at similar stunts. Victor, though, realizes his dream of meeting the great performer and receives a box that just may contain the master magician's secrets. Directed by famed puppet creator Blair Thomas, the book and lyrics are by Hannah Kohl, with music by Mark Messing.

Not to be missed! Live music, puppetry, good acting and a great story. This was thought provoking for my 11 year old and my 5 and 8 year old were enthralled! The cast and comapany treat the children with respect! Wish it was longer!

Great show for children. The ingenuity of the sets and the puppets were wonderful. The only criticism would be that sometimes the music was a little too loud and overpowered the actors.

Houdini Box at Mercury Theatre. I was
pleasantly surprised at the seating we received via Goldstar. THE PLAY WAS absolutely wonderful and I've seen many family plays. Stage settings were entertaining and actors and costuming was so professional I highly recommend it.
We took the CTA red line and it was easy. Must mention the restaurant/bar next to and inside the theatre had great customer service. Sunday Feb 2012 CH of Evanston
