Based on the novel by Victor Hugo, The Hunchback of Notre Dame tells of the love triangle between a gypsy, Esmeralda; a priest, Frollo; and a deformed bell-ringer, Quasimodo. With book, music and lyrics by rock legend Dennis DeYoung ("Lady," "Come Sail Away," "Mr. Roboto"), this classic story is told in a bold new adaptation.

I'm not selling anything, so I don't need a tagline!

My wife and I saw this show on June 28th and it was an incredible performance. The voices are uniformly excellent and the storyline is emotionally satisfying. DeYoung's long efforts in refining this show promised a spectacular product, and this cast delivered beautifully.

We were close enough to have touched the performers at some points, and our proximity only served to demonstrate how thoroughly dedicated the performances were. Even from three feet away, each eye movement and twitch of Jeremy Rill's (Frollo) facial muscles amplified the despair of the lyrics. A convincing performance from twenty feet away is satisfying; to be as convincing at arms-length is exceptional. The rest of the cast was similarly superb.

One further example of the through and through professionalism came from the orchestra and sound technician. While the sound balance was maintained perfectly throughout almost the entire show, during one of Phoebus' songs, his microphone went out (the joys of live theatre). Without skipping a beat, not only did he begin projecting more, but the orchestra's volume pulled back enough so that the audience could still focus on his performance. At that point, I knew we were in capable hands.

In bringing this episode up, I don't mean to detract from the tech side of this show. The lighting design was appropriately moody to the story, but subtle enough that it never sapped attention from the performers. While this show could easily be adapted into a large mainstage epic, given the set design's inventive use of the venue's modest space, I never felt as though the performances were constrained by limited space. The set was utilitarian and flexible and worked believably as everything from the square outside the cathedral to a dank prison cell.

While the nuts and bolts of the show deserve recognition, the vocal accomplishments provide the true reason most people need to see Hunchback. The chorus had a full, rich sound, and the leads were simply outstanding. They provided enough chills-down-the-spine and tears-in-the-eyes moments to earn a standing ovation from any threatre audience in the country. The score naturally lends itself to Frollo and Quasimodo having the lion's share of these moments, but the entire cast had a few opportunities, and they did not disappoint.

I whole-heartedly recommend this show to anyone who has even a passing interest in musical theatre. I would also encourage DeYoung and the producers to have this cast make a recording, as their performance is an accomplishment worthy of preserving and sharing with the rest of the world. See it!

This may be a small theater production but it has the feel of those amazing broadway productions like Les Miserable or Wicked. I kid you not! The talent is outstanding. We sat in the front row. (general seating so we got there early) The whole theater, aisle, back balcony and main theater were in constant use. I can't say enough about it. The musicians made it seem like a huge orchestra. The sounds filled the room with the most beautiful music and voices you'll ever have the pleasure of hearing.

We thought the score was terrific. The book was very thin. The vocal performances were also terrific. The acting was not as good, though certainly adequate — and in some cases better than that. But for this show to progress, the script needs to be virtually rewritten.
